The only thing close to being a LGS in my area is a liquor/sporting goods store that has a resident FFL. They don't stock any new guns but they do have a consignment case in the sporting goods section. While there yesterday, I found the Glock 17LL pictured below. It's been said that the 17L is a "unicorn" so I guess that makes the 17LL a unicorn that farts rainbows with a pot of gold at each end. These things are literally impossible to find. This one appears to have a Cerakoted slide and aftermarket sights but is otherwise stock. The FFL told me that the owner bought it on a whim and quickly grew tired of its unwieldyness. The price was quite reasonable. After a quick trip home to inspect and clean it, I was off to the range. As might be expected, functioning with 115 gr ammo was less than 100% but 124 and 147 gr ammo ran flawlessly. This will be a fun range gun.
Nice find. Even if frankenstiened a bit. I definitely would have bought it as well if the price was right. I'd have to cut that barrel down to normal length and recrown it though. Guessing a Lone Wolf 9" barrel.
I have a newer 17L that wouldn't function with 115g ammo. It did better with 147, but continued to have an occasional hiccup. Through reading various threads and starting one here, I decided to change the recoil spring. I'm now running an 11 lb spring and the gun shoots amazing.
It's because of the heft of the long slide. I can't remember if it's in the 17L manual or not but it is known that 115g may and it's a big may not be reliable in a 17L. I'm pretty sure my 17L shoots 115 fine but I couldn't tell you the last time I ever tried. I'm a handloader so all my 9mm stuff is 124-147g stuff.
Between the longer slide and the extra-long barrel of the 17LL, there's more mass to the moving parts. 124 gr is recommended for the 17L so I'm not surprised that the 17LL, with its longer barrel, works best with 124 gr or better. Wrong. Look closely and you'll see that the rear sight has a bright insert facing the shooter as it should be. The front sight also has a bright insert. It is an ADVANTAGE TACTICAL PYRAMID SIGHT.
Er...the Barrel is NOT stock, obviously. Nor is the Magazine Catch nor the Butt Plug, plus it looks like the klown tried to fill the frame rail notch. No doubt that there's all sorts of aftermarket garbage inside as well. To make permanent the sign of this horrible degradation, the monkey who put this abomination together stamped a second L after 17L on the slide. Pathetic, offensive, useless. OP, you have my sympathies. Perhaps you'll be able to surrender it someday to a city gun grab program for a bag of oranges.
