I'm torn between an unfired G17 with night sights for $450 and a new G34, which will likely be slightly more than $550. This will be a range gun and maybe for IDPA, so is the trigger any better for the G34 and does the 0.8" difference in sight radius really make a difference? Any insight appreciated.

Me? I'd get the 34.

You're going to shoot this gun for decades. Get the one you want, even if you have to put it off for a couple months and save. The 34/35s are very sweeeeet shooters. 17s are no slouch, but the extra length on the 34 is very nice.

That would be a hard question.
Around here the new 17 with night sights would be all of 550.
The 34 575=625 so those prices sound good.
But like Steve is partial to the 34/35 I go for the 17L & 24.
I have one of each, and really like them, other than that I have a 17, a 23, and a 21.
I went to the Gun Show Sunday, with every intention of buying a 19, but a Very Slightly Used Springfield 1911 Black Stainless cought my attention, and the price was just 100 more than a new G19.
I couldn't resist, and it just followed me home. The poor little orphan didn't have anyone to love, so I gave it a good home.
