I have 6 Glock OEM G17 mags. I found by accident that I can easily load 18 rounds in them, when they are supposed to hold 17 rounds.

    Anyone else notice this?

    Bad idea.

If the mag is made for 17 rounds, why put another round in?

Glock builds their mag that way, so the spring can move easier to feed the pistol.

Then why don't all Glock mags hold more than the indicated rounds? Most Glock mags (eg. G-30 ten round mags) have the spring completely compressed.

    All my G-17 mags hold 18; sometimes I load 18, sometimes 17.
Should not hurt the mag or spring to load what fits. Has not hurt mine over the years.

Probably not a good idea, at least for magazines used for serious carry. While you might be able to cram another round into the magazine, it may also effect reliability by changing very slightly the angle at which the round is fed into the chamber. IIRC, similar issues arose with the M16/AR15 and some off the magazines commonly used in those guns.

I can't (and wouldn't dream of trying to) tell anyone what to do with their gear so it is up to you to do as you please.

    Good luck.

An automobile tire will hold 50-60 pounds of air - maybe more....not meant to but it will. Think it's a good idea to put more air in it than the manufacturer recommends?

18rds in the mag might cause extra drag on the slide affecting reliability.

Certainly your call but I download one round to make a hurry-up reload easier under stress.

    Good Luck

    smitty,

You do know that I was not advocating loading past the design capacity of the 17 round magazine, yes? :)

I typically load to capacity and leave it at that.

I've seen a pistol (S&W M&P) suffer feeding problems when the shooter overloaded the magazine past it's intended capacity.

Even if possible, I would not overload the magazine.

I had an old G17 mag that would take 18 rounds. It would cause feeding issues because the mag spring was weak. I replaced the spring and the feeding issues went away and I could only load 17 rounds.

I would recomend replacing your mag springs...
