Just replaced the stock plastic sights on my new Gen4 17 and noticed that the front had the hex screw on it so I was able to save it for either a back up or to go back to plastic if the need ever arises. Did older generation Glocks have the hex screw as well?

I believe this was a Gen 4 upgrade, but I'm not 100% on this.

I don't know if the actual sights are interchangeable between Gen 3 and 4 but all of my Gen 3 Glock 26s and 19s have hex screws to hold the front sights on. I think this is true of all of the later Gen three Glocks, at least in 9 mm.

I was about to rip the original off with a pair of pliers like all the videos I've seen, it was nice to be able to save it.

They started using these about a year ago... they are sooooo much better than the pinned plastic ones.

My 3rd gens came with the screw sight, but I still ripped them off with pliers.

I did find the stock sights next to worthless. I am really liking the sight picture of my Sevigny/Dawson FO combo.

I bought a g19 not too long ago and just took it out to shoot it and noticed that the front sight looked different than my other glocks. Mine is a gen 3, less than a year old and has the screw. Also notice that the rear sight was moved way off to the left...I dunno how it happened, probably didn't get a good look over in QC.

I know they get scuffed up pretty easy but... I don't have any issues with their accuracy.

I will qualify my comment by clarifying that this is my first Glock and I am used to a .070 width front sight on my Kimber that I had installed years ago. To me, the width of the stock front blade didn't seem as precise. The Dawson I installed is .105 and allows me a bit more accuracy and a more familiar sight picture.
