G17 Gen 5 MOS Owners Weigh In

For those who purchased a G17 Gen 5 MOS , what were the main reasons why you decided on this model ? I currently own a nice G17 Gen 3 with night sights and finger grooves are fine with me . The G17 Gen 5 MOS is mainly appealing to me because of the new Glock trigger , the marksman barrel which has shown to be more accurate (especially at greater distances) and the MOS cut out for Halosun SCS red dot made for the Glock MOS cut out . I don't care about switching slides , so the only other Glock in the running is the close G45 MOS *which I do not plan to carry) . The G45 is said to balance better in the hand than the G17 - but individual opinions may vary on G17 / G45 hand balance ... Your replies and experiences to the above ?

I bought mine in late 2021. At that time anything MOS was hard to find around here. If you did find one they were stupid expensive. I found mine from a dealer at a gun show. It was a factory rebuilt. It was my first optic ready pistol. I was going to optics after cataract surgery as now iron sights are somewhat blurry but my distance vision is great. The optic solved that issue. The 17 has become one of my favorite Glocks. I have the Holosun SCS optic on it. It is a very accurate pistol. It was my first G17 as I have a couple of G19s that had been getting all of my shooting time. At first Ai wasn't sure I liked it after shooting the 19. It has grown on me and has become the Glock I shoot the most. Recoil is mild and the dot makes it very easy to shoot.

I recently bought the G17 Gen 5 non-MOS simply because I had parts left from previous guns I owned and I didn’t want an optic. For the MOS, I bought a G47, which made more sense to me since it has greater parts compatibility with the G19 and G45. If you plan on owning a G19, G49, or G45 the G47 is a better choice than the G17, in my view.

From a practical standpoint, the Gen 5 and GMB hasn’t been more accurate than the Gen 4s I’ve owned or those I continue to own and I normally shoot at 25 yards. GLOCKs are assembled guns with stacked tolerances, so the barrel alone won’t be a guarantee of greater accuracy unless the better barrel also has a tighter and more consistent lockup.

I own the G45, G47, and G17. The G45 will have a little more felt recoil than the G17, but both guns being 9mm are mild when it comes to recoil. Drawing and presenting the gun, I prefer the G45. Just holding the two guns in my hand, I prefer the G45. And I also prefer the recoil impulse of the G45. However, when it comes to shooting, both guns perform about the same for me. I’ve been shooting the G45 and G17 for the last couple of months trying to decide which I will use in GSSF. I’ve put a 1000+ rounds through each side-by-side, but I have far more trigger time with the G17 Gen 5 overall, as my last G17 Gen 5 had a little over 67K rounds on it. I still can’t decide which gun I’ll use because on paper one hasn’t proven to be better for me than the other, despite my subjective preference for the G45.

My G45.5 with Trijicon before I installed the raised sights. I have the G17.5 as well but prefer the way the 45 feels, points, etc. I have not tried the Holosun solution...yet!
I liked the gen5 triggers a lot more than previous generations, but found I like the Timney solution even more. I now wonder if a Gen3 with a Timney would have solved my issue with the earlier trigger just as well...but that is only one of the upgrades. At the time I went to the Gen5, the cost of barrel, milling, etc. made it an easy decision to just go with the Gen5MOS models.
The G45.5 has become a constant companion, replacing the G19 in my laptop bag (I EDC a P365) that goes with me everywhere.
I would have no problems bringing the G45.5 to a conflict.

I bought a G17 Gen5 MOS because I had bought/used every G17 made as the different Generation variants became available (Gen1 thru Gen4 and a G17M) and found the 17M the best of the series. Since I intended to go with an optic, the MOS version fit my needs. All that being said, as soon as I switched to a G34 Gen5 MOS I have consistently stayed with that specific pistol for regular use and now only use my G17 Gen5 as a dedicated/conventional open (AmeriGlo) sight pistol.

I have a pair of 45 MOS, one for GSSF and one for duty use but have a 47 and a 17 MOS that will be getting new sights and AimPoint ACRO sights.
The 45 is my favorite; it feels better in my hand and with a dot on it the shorter sight radius isn’t an issue.

I could be wrong but I thought I read that the 17 would no longer be available in MOS, but the 47 would be. If that is true, you may want to consider the 47 instead.

I have a 47. It is my favorite handgun. It is by far the most accurate and easiest to shoot Glock I have ever fired. It is in factory form other than upgraded sights. Trigger work is not required. I highly recommend it.
