Looking to purchase a G17 Gen 4 as a range gun. (I own 5 - 45's but ammo cost is FUBAR!!)

Possibly looking to tinker in USPSA and/or IDPA.

Anyone know of any problems with them?

I read a few years ago that there were some FTF, SP issues due to spring issues. Also issues with weak ammo.

I own a 17 gen4. I have had zero problems with it. The only time I had an issue was when I put an aftermarket trigger connector in. But I've had zero malfunctions. I think they are great. I also think the Gen 3s are great too. I think Glock has taken care of all the bugs on the Gen4. My gun was made in late February 2012.

500 rounds through my new Gen 4 G17 FDE now. Nothing but a joy to shoot. No brass in the face, no FTEs or FTFs, no nothing but holes in the paper where I'm holding my sights.

no problem with my gen4 glock 17. i've put close to 500 rounds through it with 0 problems. i've even put my pistol through reloading tests to determine it's particular sweet spot (different powders, primers, bullets, velocities, etc) and still ran into 0 problems.

I bought a gen4 17 2 months ago and have been getting brass to the face and erratic ejections. Just sent it back on Wed to get fixed. Outside of the brass to the face I love it and have had no failures at all.

My wife just shot her new Gen4 17 for the first time tonight. It runs like an open sore.

I have a Gen4 g17 with 1500rds through it and even though the ejection is a little erratic, I still love the gun. I did have one stove pipe within the first 200rds, but after I called glock and got them so send me the 012 RSA I haven't had any other malfunctions. I also did install a LWD .40 extractor and that almost totally cured the erratic ejection.
I plan on buying the new ejector assembly, but not because I need it. I just want to try the new part and since it's cheap I figured what the heck. I also just picked up a gen4 g19 and would like to get a gen4 34 and a FDE gen4 17 down the road.

I always think a new gun is great but let me offer another suggestion.
If you are looking at getting a 9 mm because of 45 ACP ammunition costs, let me offer a Dillion in place of the 9 mm. http://www.dillonprecision.com/#/Dillon_Reloading_Machines-8-1.html Also http://www.brianenos.com/store/dillon.sqdeal.html
For the cost of a handgun you can be reloading, not that it will save you any money but you will shoot a whole lot more.
If you have interest in any completive shooting sports this will allow you to do so to the amount you wish, just a thought. SJ 40

Oakland PD issued new Gen 4's a few months back, then quickly recalled them all for a reason they never would explain. I assume the problem was fixed, but that was very strange and I never found out why.

There are several million dollars worth of G4 guns delivered on FBO listed contracts to FLETC, FBI, and other three letter acronyms (TLAs) out there. The no-bid contracts continue.

The guns work in the real world.

Maybe, but OPD recalled them for some reason. I just wonder what it was?

I think this statement gives the readers a clue,The Oakland Police Department wants Glock to ensure the weapons' reliability before returning them to the officers.
    If these were G 22's I might suspect the Gen 4 magazines,introducing FTF's.

Thanks SJ. I have been considering that option for a while now. I used to reload .308 and .41 mag.
It is cheaper to reload after ur initial buy in is paid off isn't it?
In any case I may put that off for a few more years until my time frees up. 3 kids all under 15 and life right now. NO TIME. Don't want to buy equip. that collects dust. Its why I sold my older gear. Its definately in my future though.
