G-17 Was My Choice...

I had to make a road trip last week to attend a funeral.Of all the options I had,I chose my G-17.No need to worry about rust due to weather up in the mountains, good magazine capacity, potent enough caliber, night sights.I was thinking of just pocketing a P-32 but decided on the 17 instead.tom.

Going to Tucson one more time (to finalize a property purchase) this week. That will be three trips in a little under two weeks.

I showed my G17 to my father in law and he wants to go shoot it out at the property I'm purchasing. I'm taking some WWB 115gr. and some Winchester Ranger 147gr.

He's an older gentleman stuck using a walker now days but he still likes his guns. I'm thinking he's going to enjoy the old workhorse.

BTW, its 78F here in SoCal today. Hope ya'all are staying warm!

Thanks for the update. It's -1 degree right now going down to -11 over night with a high of -1 tomorrow. Quite chilly near the bay window and downright bone chilling all day. Should warm up to the 20s on Wednesday. tom. :cold:

So I bought some property out there, 2 and a half acres adjecent to my father in laws. Together, that makes about 10 all total.

I made a little back stop in a natural wash and he fired my old 2nd Gen G17. He loved it. Says its probably too late for him to get used to not having a 'safety' on the gun but he agreed that for defense it pretty much beats out anything else he's ever shot.

We were using some American Arms 115gr. ball, so the recoil was very soft. Once I loaded her up with 124gr.+P GDHP and fired a few rounds he was impressed and wanted to shoot her again.

We had a great time. Next time we go out I'll try and get some pics.

Funny thing is, he really didn't like my 26, says the grip just wasn't right. But he loved the 17. He carries a Taurus snubby. Go figure.

He's so old school he won't carry a round in the chamber over the hammer. I explained the transfer bar won't allow the gun to go off without pulling the trigger...but he's set in his ways I guess.

All in all it was a great trip and I can't wait to go back in March.

I have 10 other handguns, but just got my first Glock yesterday, a G17 Gen 4. I've have already done a detailed strip, did the "25 cent" trigger component polish job, and put in a 3.5 lb connector.

I like it.
Congrats and welcome to the club. tom. :welcome:

Hey guys!

Just a quick update to tell ya that I shot an all steel challenge match in Pomona, CA this last Thursday. I used my Gen 3 G17 and she performed admirably.

I had my venerable Gen 2 there just in case but she was not needed. The old man shot well and my four man team ended in a respectable 13th out of 30 teams.

I had a great time and my only regret is I would have loved to stay for the man on man elimination matches so my G17 could have shown up a lot of S&W M&P Pro's and the Glock 34 boys.

Just love shooting the G17!

I carry a G18 mag with my in a bag when I go to work. Did you actually carry the mag on your person? I don't know how I could possibly do that...:dunno:

Also, I'll be shooting another match (IDPA style law enforcement fund raiser for Baker to Vegas) on Monday. I'll let you guys know how I do!

Hey guys!

Been a while. Never did shoot that IDPA match but I've shot a couple of LE IDPA style matches since and the old 2nd Gen G17 keeps on doing great.

Qualified yesterday. I only have one more to go before retirement. Here's a pic of the G17 & G26 qual targets:

We KNOW the guns can shoot and the old man is still doing his part!

Happy New Year all! Spend Christmas in the desert and had a great time. On the 26th I took out my Steyer Scout just to make sure it's still zero'd and it shot very well. Fired about 40 rounds out of my Centennial Mini-14 cause it needed shooting.

With me was a father and son team that had never shot a Glock before. So I brought out my trusty 2nd Gen G17 and we had a great time. The 13 YO kid really enjoyed shooting the old war horse as did my father in law. The boys dad took a liking to my G26 which also had a few rounds fired, and he really liked my Galco SSII shoulder rig.

Anyway, a great time was had by all and the old reliable 2nd Gen G17 worked as advertised, no surprise there.

I still prefer the G17 to all others, and I have Gen1 and Gen2 represented in my safe, currently. The Gen2 was made perfect with my installation of Trijicon HD sights, a Pearce frame plug, and an OEM extended slide stop lever. My Gen1's are being returned to the "mother ship" in Smyrna to have the frame relief cuts made. At this point, for me it's a toss-up between Gen1 and Gen2 in the G17 as far as what I like best. I know that I have no use for Gen3's grip features, although I could easily live with Gen3 (preferably RTF2) or a Gen4 if need be.

I have G19's in Gen2, Gen3, and Gen4. G17 still wins hands-down for shootability, though G19 is admittedly better for wear while seated.

Yeah, I have to agree the G-17 fits my hands the best of the fleet. tom.

I just picked up a 2nd gen G17 last month and am getting another tomorrow. Great guns, they work every time!

BTW, great thread, deputy tom and HUGO R.

Thanks S.Kelly. We'll be waiting for a range report on your Gen 2s. tom. :fred:
