It's a filter - do what you have to do. Get two cheap ones and tape them together to make one. Whatever works...

I have all electric (off-peak) heat in my house. Very nice - I get the OP electricity at half price. But no ventilation to circulate the air for filtering. So dust can be an issue. I have two Oreck air purifiers but the filters are very expensive (relative to the cost of the unit). Last winter I took a cheap furnace filter and taped onto a cheap box fan. It worked great. A couple bucks for a filter.

I bought two more air purifiers this past summer - Craig's List and local on-line auctions. One of them had good, clean, filters and is running right now. The other needed new filters. Just like the OP, I couldn't find exact fit filters for it for a reasonable price. A cheap furnace filter is a couple of bucks. A replacement air purifier filter runs $40-$100+ I bought two cheap furnace filters, cut them to make one, taped them together and it's running right now too.

I now have 5 air purifiers running my house. I really don't need that many - but I want to see what works and what doesn't. So far I have found - do what works. A home air filter is a home air filter. Get house air to run thru it and you're all set. If you need a special filter (HEPA, etc.) - you can still buy a cheap one and modify it to work. You don't need exact fit to filter air.

What would I do? I would have a ducting contractor modify the ductwork to install a proper filter rack.

but then, that's just me. I don't want to be cutting a finger changing filters or fighting with it every few months when I change filters.

Go to any air filter supplier and order a bunch made to the size needed, and be done with it. Google for local air filter supplier with city or town’s name, or go online and order 6 or 12 filters custom sized and delivered to your door.

I would get a washable/reusable one that fits from Amazon for $45.

I just did the Google search for the OP and found many listings. I just grabbed the one that listed the necessary filter size. FilterBuy was at the top of the list. I didn't even check prices. lol

I would scrap the furnace and replace it with one that uses the most common filter you can buy locally.:clown:

Furnace has nothing to do with what size air filters are needed, in this case. That is a function of the duct parts that are assembled and attached to the furnace. But I am guessing that this is sarcasm since you are suggesting a $2-4G repair for a non-problem.* 16 x 22 air filters are a common size filter, and it is my take that the local supplier that OP had visited initially is the issue. Me, I am so over local suppliers not carrying common items or not willing to stock their shelves and bins. If I can’t buy what I want in 1 or 2 attempts then I have no issue with buying it online. I would rather support the locally owned small businesses, but they are getting harder to find, and I don’t feel that I owe any big box store anything. They get 1 chance only.

Besides all of that, odds are fair that if the local does not have it that they will order it online from the same source that anyone can order it from, except they will markup the price for their effort.

    * Sounds suspiciously like another GT’ers solution to a simple problem about a Hide-A-Key being to easy to spot by any burglar. So his solution was to buy 500 Hide-A-Keys and scatter them in his yard. Why use a $10 fix when you can choose to spend $500+ instead?

    What I would do?

I have Allergies, 6 cats and 2 dogs.

I vacuum the house twice a week.

I buy the best 3M filter I can which is the proper size.

    Allergies suck.

It's called that, but it's not what it's for. Don't use it on ducts.
