hmph. Maybe I'm too paranoid about drinking and driving--I don't drive after 2-3 beers, depending on how long it takes me to drink them--1 hr for 2 beers, 1.5-2 hrs for 3 beers type thing.

So one of my buddies has a nice breathalyzer that we are invited to try out.

After about 2 hours and 6 beers, I wait 20 minutes and go for it... first time it registers a .05, second time, several minutes later, a .04.

Seriously??? WELL below the legal limit after a six pack in two hours, maybe two and a half??? Why have I paid for so many taxis?!!??!

Maybe my liver is just absolutely wonderful or something...

Yes, I felt slightly buzzed and I wouldn't have driven...makes me REALLY wonder about people who hit .1, .2, etc etc... and then get behind the wheel...they have to be pretty damn drunk...

I've talked with officers who got DUI convictions based upon video taken during the field test even though their BAL was below the threshold in this state. (WV)

I've taken dozens of those tests. The thing is you have to blow and blow until you feel like you can't blow anymore and then blow some more.

Most personal breathalyzers are not very accurate. And like Ol Timer said, you have to exhale hard to have a good reading. Most people who do their own tests, don't blow hard enough because they don't want the real answer.

This was 'borrowed' from a cop, and calibrated by the sober people every few blows.

If you didn't blow hard enough, it beeped angry like at ya. If you did it right, it didn't

    Ender,

That's why real Cops scoff when some GNG'er or like person goes on about "how easy it is to get a DWI after 2 beers..."

It takes work to get up and over .08, then takes work to stay there.

I took part in a supervised exhibition a few years ago, administered by one of our local Highway Patrolmen. I poured a stiff drink (about 4 oz. of bourbon w/ ginger ale) and drank it, ate a steak dinner and had a second stiff drink in the process in a little over an hour. Blew on the intoxilizer at 15 minute intervals. Bottom line is that for a good while after you finish drinking your alcohol level increases. At one point I blew a
.06 and still felt relatively unimpaired. After finishing the drinks and eating a big meal, I reached .08 and felt impaired to some degree, but still would have driven (at least in my younger years). After being driven home however, I am sure I would have blown well over .08, and I am sure I would have wound up in the hoosegow if I'd been stopped driving. Taught me a valuable lesson. Basically, you may be legally impaired before you recognize that fact. Now if I drink moderately at a party or restaurant, I stop drinking at least an hour before it is time to leave, make sure I eat something and drink plenty of water. Or better yet, arrange for a DD.

A general rule (everyone is different) is that the body can handle about one drink an hour and not have any detrimental effect on you. that would be a one ounce shot, or a 12 ounce beer. Drink the shot or the beer, wait one hour, and you could test 0. Depending on a person's body weight, how many drinks are consumed in an hour will effect how fast you get to .08.

That you put borrowed in quotations, and I know we all know not to talk to the police so you couldn't have asked permission, I can only assume you stole it from him.
