I admit, I did this once to try and melt a frozen over windshield. It shattered the window very quickly.:wow:

So why did it do that?

So,never pour boiling hot water on your frozen car windshield. It wont rapidly melt the ice away but will cause it to implode.:faint::rofl:

Did the opposite with a hot pyrex casserole dish. Cool tap water, hot dish and glass everywhere. It was interesting, but the windshield would have been a better show.

Grandpa had a Cadilliac in California. One hot summer day he parked under the misters we has around the house and when the cold water hit the hot windshield it cracked into a spiderweb.

The cold windshield had contracted slowly and uniformly, so stresses had time to equalize.

When the hot water hit it, it caused the glass to expand, but not slowly, and not uniformly.

The glass broke due to the sudden uneven stresses that were caused by the different rates of expansion in the different parts of the glass.

If it's really cold, mix rubbing alcohol with water. The alcohol will help to keep down refreezing.

You could have used lukewarm water with no problem at all..even cold water would have taken the ice off with no harm.
