I have a .45 to start with. Are there any instances in which an FMJ round may be a better choice than hollowpoints?

If they're outdoors in Alaska, dressed in a few layers, using a walrus as a shield?

Self defense means you are trying to save your life. Would you want to use anything less than the best available ammo?

"plinkers" may have a higher rate of failure than the expensive stuff, and may be underpowered in general.

I still carried extra mags full of them from time to time. Good ammo is costly.

I'm thinking like are there many instances where you think you would need to penetrate much in order to take down the assailant?

If so you may want to look at something more powerful. FMJ has several undesirable characteristics - it tends to overpenetrate, it tends to ricochet, and it tends to be cheap (and therefore inconsistent and no flash supressant).

Good FMJ ammo may be necessary in order to penetrate body armor? What if they are wearing some sort of protection? :whistling:

I know this is far out and "what ifs" are stupid...

    but...

    What if?

    Simple:

    1. 2 shots to the chest
    2. 1 shot to each hip
    3. 1 shot to the head

I'm afraid I might lose count if I'm in fear for my life, so I'll shoot a burst of 3 to 6 up the chest, then if the head is still where it was, aim one or two there.

If the head is not still where it was, maybe the fight is over?

No reason to ever prefer FMJ for self defense against humans, assuming a proper self defense caliber. If it's a mousegun like a .32acp, then FMJ might penetrate a little better and jhp might not expand anyway.

I practice so that shot placement is automatic, no counting necessary. Do it a thousand times and it will be automatic for you too.

I don't want it to be automatic, if he falls dead after one burst, my preprogrammed followup shots targeting where he previously stood might hit innocent bystanders. They would certainly be hard to explain or justify.

I'm not taking the practiced head shot unless he's still standing.

I'll shoot him to the ground, and figure out the round count later, if I'm not shooting at paper targets.
