On another site there was a report that the sharks may have been young great whites. That would go against the common belief that great whites are lone predators. I'm thinking bull sharks.

My guess is that the guy got bit once, one real good bite, and then more sharks that were already in the area due to migration habits came by to check it out, realized it was people meat, and kept going. The guy was alive when the lifeguard got out to him and said something to the effect of (from the video in OP) "I've been bitten by A shark." Until the final report comes out, that we may never see, we'll never know. But I would bet that it was one bite and he just bled out.

If this was a frenzy, the lifeguard would've never gotten him out alive and he sure wouldn't have been talking.

I was thinking bull shark too or maybe a big lemon shark.

That's the risk when you go into the ocean. One I'm sure an experienced surfer knows very well.

Condolences to his family & friends.

    On the contrary...

It is RARE that you hear of a Great White Shark attack here in Florida...it is usually bull sharks that attack fatally here.

The Great Whites are seen here more often when the water temperatures drop. The water temperature is 58; it isn't often that the ocean water gets that cold...we've had a cold winter here.

That is a little south of me. I stick to the hot tub this time or year and the pool the other 9 months of summer. The sharks stay in their world I stay in mine and we get along fine.

My parents owned a condo on Daytona Beach for a few years on the 16th floor.

It was almost frightening to watch how many swimmers/surfers would be out in the water, and how many sharks were between them and the shore at times.

I remember when we were much younger how far out we use to swim...

    Not doing that any more!!!

I always hate to hear that, seems shark related deaths have been on the rise lately. I surf in Carolina Beach, NC and we don't see many sharks, though I know that they are out there. I'm more likely to die on the way there in the car than get eaten, so I take my chances.

That lifeguard has some kahonas. Can't imagine swimming out to help someone and finding out sharks were all around.
