We have discussed survival equipment and skills.

Rather than identify a specific skill or piece of equipment, we need to think within a larger framework.

1. you have to own the night. This means that you don't give up the ability to function when the sun goes down. At one extreme, it means night movement. At the other extreme, you need light to see which means the ability to do an equipment check, a conference, sktech a plan of action on a piece of paper or to perform a simple task that would otherwise have to wait until daylight.

2. you need to own the resupply. It may be your own resupply. This means having water and other provisions stockpiled/identified/available to you. It may mean denying an opposition their supply of water or provisions.

3. you need information. This might include being able to see further, hear further or communicate fufurther than your normal organs of sight, hearing or speaking. You may need to be able to read clues like tracks, broken grass or discarded equipment and understand their meaning.

4. you need mobility. Mobility means the ability to get to where you want to be efficiently and effectively. Your mode of transporation is what is available to you, starting with good physical conditioning and appropriate clothing.

5. you need to be the master of illusion. You appear strong when you are weak and weak when you are strong. You appear to be one place and yet are in another place of superior position. You practice retreating/retiring from combat as frequently attack so that the reality is that you are always advancing in a way to your advantage. As a great American philosopher once said "float like a butterfly and sting like a bee".:wavey:

Yeah, where you live you're more than likely to need all those skills and then some before the rest of us.

own the night....

That's why I have "light" as one of my big 5: Knife, Water, Fire, Light, Meds

When appropriate/necessary, use the night for sleep, and when appropriate, use it for work/travel.

Make it your friend. Use it as a tool.

Night Movements. Translated from the Japanese by C. Burnett. Translation of original 1913 Japanese military manual. 83 pages. Can be downloaded and printed out. Not copyrighted.

Very exact and detailed on how you train.

Written after the Battle of Port Arthur in 1905 (I spoke to a participant on Mt. Hakone in 1976). The Soviets had their butts kicked in the 1930s by the Japanese in North Asia until they studied night movement.

Similarly, the ghurkas were feared because they perfected night movement/fighting. If you research, you may be lucky and learn the individual tactics that they perfected against the Japanese.

By the way, I figured out that you could simulate night shooting by having classes in which the class (and not the instructors) wears progressively darker welder's goggles. I showed this to an instructor and he adopted it for his advanced class.

Your brain is your best resource. Study. Learn from other people. Keep the best of the information/skills and throw out the rest.
