A five gallon bucket is a handy way to store supplies. I've had 5 gallon buckets full of supplies in all my permanent deer blinds at my hunting property and one in the cabin for years. They have mostly bad weather stuff in them in case you are out hunting, forget something, get caught in a storm or get wet or hurt etc.

casual circumstances are very different than hostile ones. If you are carrying a bucket thats one hand which is occupied all the time and if you need that hand you must put the bucket down. Can you sling a bucket? Have you ever run with a bucket? How many times can you drop a plastic bucket before its rendered useless? What happens when that sorry handle busts off? How quiet are they when carrying them? Can you climb a fence with a bucket?

I use plastic buckets for all sorts of casual needs but I am not going to store emergency gear in them.

I could be wrong but I don't think the linked article is about using a bucket as a bug out bag. In fact I don't think it mentions bugging out at all. I assumed the point of the article was 1-have emergency supplies and 2- a bucket is as good place as any to keep those supplies together.

Alternatives to a bucket for storing stuff in the home that isn't for bugging out could be a box, or perhaps a Rubber Made plastic storage chest or whatever. The point (as I see it) is to have all your stuff in one place so you can find it when needed.
