Borrowed a 550 from a friend of mine to load some ammo I normally don't load much of. Needed to load a small lot for the gun show this weekend.

I could grow to like this, but my chair has wheels. Every time I push forward to prime the case, my chair rolls backward away from the bench. I have to scoot myself back in position every time.

Going from standing with a 1050 to sitting with a 550 (no strong mount) is quite the experience. I can't believe how slow the 550 is compared to the 1050. :faint:

Throw a shop rag under your chair so it gets caught up in the wheels.

I reload while sitting on a bar stool and like the setup. Recently, I picked up a third 550 which came with a strongmount (the second 550 was for a family member who apparently isn't all that interested...). When I mount this new press, it will require me to stand while reloading. I'll see whether Squeaker's rants about standing while reloading are true.

I always sit at my reloading bench. I feel it is much more comfortable.

I have tried it both ways and I prefer to sit.

Sitting is the way to go. I have a cheap desk chair with wheels. The combination of cheap wheels, and carpet, keep it anchored when I reload.

Sam's Club sells a comfortable, high-quality, pneumatic adjustable stool that is near perfect. I scored a pair of them and do all loading chores using them except running my Dillon SDB. I deliberately have it mounted high on a strong mount with the bullet tray, empty case holder & all making standing imperative for safety without remounting. I have a disabled friend that does a fantastic job on his 550b from his wheel chair. Bottom line, either way is fine if you plan for them.

I think the only times I sat while reloading was when I started handloading in my inlaws basement using the Lee hand press and LCT after I got it as a gift. The 550, the Rockchucker, and the 1050 have all been used while standing. My benchtop is 36 inches from the floor.

    Sitting at the 550?

Drive a self tapper into two of the plastic office chair wheels from the top of the dust covers ... works like a charm.

Standing let's you use your entire body for leverage. Sitting does not. Most of my "push to prime " is just a lean at my ankles in toward the bench with my body.

For us old guys, sitting while reloading is good for the back.

I've only ever sat while using my 650 without a strong mount. No actual or perceived leverage problems that I'm aware of - and if I had to stand, I'd load about 40-50 rounds a session before my legs and back would be kaput.

I have found standing to be less strain on my back. IF and that is a big IF, the press is high enough. You have to avoid any bending at the waist when using the press. For me that means the table (no strong mount) has to be 48" off the floor. Then it is less tiring to load while standing. I load 100 move to go load the primer tube. Come back, load another 100, Size some bullets, that type of thing.

Sitting on a padded (old) barstool while loading, takes the stress off of my bad back.

If you have casters on your chair/stool, grab a couple of Jorgensen Clamps and lock those wheels!!!

While I'm only using the Rock Chucker to load I do sit and my stool does have casters.

Tip of the Week: When using a stool with casters don't sweep up the spent primers on the floor as they act as miniature wheel chocks.

I sit while reloading. After I saw one of these I had the feeling I need one.
