I want a critter. I don't have one as yet, but I'd like to get a GSD one day. Beautiful animals. I've had cats, dogs, and two snakes over my lifetime so far.

Why do GSD people include the "dog" suffix when discussing the breed? I have always just referred to them as German Shepherds, but people who are serious about the breed seem to prefer "German Shepherd Dog-or GSD." Why is "dog" necessary?

I never have understood why they include dog. I was more or less, 'going with the flow', when I started using 'GSD'. ;f

Back to the topic at hand, I highly recommend GSD. :) But I also recommend any GSD mix as well. I was on the search for a fullbred when I ran across my GSD/Malamute mix.

I suggest you look at this listing for GSD rescue groups listed by state.

    http://www.austingermanshepherdrescue.org/state_orgs.htm

We got Cassie from AGSRG and they always have some great GS to adopt. It just isn't a local thing. Some people from 400 miles away have been known to adopt a GS.

The Austin group has, in the past, transported a dog half way to Arizona to be met by a volunteer to finish the transport to the adoptive person. Most are pure bred but not registered. The adopt fee is less than half what you would expect to pay for one out of a litter. Some have been well trained by previous owners.
