I'm going to buy my first Glock today at a local store here in SA TX, the two pistols that I'm interested are G 17 and G 19, now the local store had one G 19 3rd gen available. My first purpose for the pistol is target shooting and home self defence. Now which will be a better choice 19 or 17 3rd or 4th generation ??? Thank you...

Can't go wrong with either, though I think the size of the 19 is more versatile and fits my hand better. Just see which fits your hand best and go from there!

    Congrats, and welcome to GT!

If you won't be carrying it, then I would recommend the G17 Gen4. If you're considering carrying it later on, then go with the G19.

Congrats brotha! Some people say Glocks are ugly but I think they're beautiful guns and I've loved them since I was a kid. :wavey:

Oh, and 4th Gen G17 FTW!

Which one fits your hand better and do you prefer the Gen 4 texture, shorter grips and mag release over the Gen 3. I would vote Gen 4 G19 but Im not a fan of the mag release but really like the no back strap option and texturing.

Most people will say go with the 19, it is Glock's most popular model. I say go for the 17 and if you want concealment, get the 26. The 19 is great but it's kind of a compromise gun in my opinion. Almost big enough to be a great "fighting" gun and a little too large for EDC duty.

    Of course it matters.

The bottom line is to go with the one that fits you best :)

I like the G17 g4, but you might like something different.

G19, it will do everything the 17 will do in a slightly better sized package.

Got my Glock.......... And the G 17 won. I don't think the 19 was for me. The 17 felt great and I like it, just perfect. Let's see when can I get some pics for you guys. Thank you again.

Here's an alternate opinion: but the size of gun has nothing to do with how it fits your hand, except maybe a little weight difference. It's the back-strap.

Gen 3 has one standard size grip for 9/40/357 frames.

Gen 4 guns come with 2 extra back-straps.
If you add the smaller one, that'll make the grip like a gen3.
The larger one is - Uh, larger.
Leaving the extra back-straps off makes it ...... Smaller

If it's for carry the smaller compact 19, or sub-compact 26 are easier to conceal.

If it's for target and home defense, the longer barrel G17 will deliver a little better accuracy and velocity.

Ed: given your stated purposes, I'd say you made the better choice.

Be sure to give us a range report!

I went with a G 19 Gen 4 a few months ago and I have no complaints. Fits right - shoots straight!! Shoot them both first and see which one you feels better.

I would say go for the 19. If you want to carry, its there, if not, its still a great range gun!
