I've helped put some people in there. Also picked up some that got their bus ticket and couldn't stay out of the trouble on the 101. I think the record for me was he was 2 hours out of prison before I caught him.

I’m right there with you. But as I get older it takes a few days more to heal up than before.

If that were true they would be held to the same standards as civilians, instead they are held to a higher standard. Rightly so as they are given much more authority to act in performance of their duties, which in most states includes at all times, on duty or off.

Institutionalized. Some people can’t make it on the outside. I went to school with a guy like that. I bet in the last 40 years he’s only been out of the joint 3-4 years total. He killed a cab driver at 16 yrs old. Served 24 yrs then got out. Then he began his in/out cycle and now he’s at the Luther Lackett Correctional facility in KY.

To be correct that would be "Luther Luckett".
I've transported inmates in and out of there more times than I can count.

Obviously I don’t get down there much! Although I will eat at One Nineteen Main for supper if I’m down that way. Good food! And thank you for your service!

I recommend you keep a little hard cover diary for every day of the training. It'll be fun to reread in 20 years, and you will forget names and experiences if not recorded.

    W...T...F...

A little PT and you need 3 days rest???

Sounds like you joined the Salvation Army or some other softie type organiz....wait a minute. You posted FRIDAY. So you’re off for the weekend?

    Never mind, that seems reasonable.

Congrats on starting your academy! Best of luck, study hard, ears open, mouth shut, and you’ll do great.

Oh, hell. Are we gonna do this again?

    Civilians don’t have qualified immunity.

As a civilian, If I detain your ass( and I have, a couple times) I have to be absolutely CERTAIN I’m right, or it’s off to jail for me. If there is a badge in your pocket, it’s different.

It just is, whether you like it or not...

Just be sure to wear your hat!

Like someone else said, keep a diary of everything that you do there and everything that you find amusing and look back at it later. I went to the basic academy 10 years ago and don’t remember much about it. I still keep in touch with a few guys from there. I went through my state’s troop school 2 years ago and I still have nightmares about that. It was 21 weeks long and I questioned every life choice I ever made up until that point, but having been though that, I came out a better person. A lot of the time I was there, I had no concept of anything...all I knew was that it was day time or it was night time and that I hated life. We had about 15 drill instructors for 40 guys and damn those guys were good at what they did!!! As miserable as it was, I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything in the world.

Has already been said...but you have two ears, two eyes, and one mouth for a good reason. Listen, watch, and learn at least twice as much as you speak. I'm with a State LE agency, but I'm sure a lot applies to corrections as well. Watch the hands. Treat people respectfully until it is time to flip the switch and pound their ass. Then be respectful again after they are in cuffs.

    Good luck and be safe.

    Correct you are, my friend!

I should have quoted Mr Betts.
