I'm trying to get a firewall installed on a machine running Win98. Because free is good, I tried to install Zonealarm, but it no longer works with Win98.

So, is there a good, free firewall I might download?

How spendy and difficult is to upgrade to Win ME? It comes with a firewall. I'd rather not go this route, though.

    What about a hardware firewall?

    thx!

Windows ME is the worst OS Redmond ever unleashed on the industry, do NOT upgrade to it. Your chances of finding a sofware firewall still working for Win98, is probably slim. It might be wise, to go to Best Buy and spring the $50-60 for a good hardware firewall(which will be a 1000x more secure than a software firewall anyways)....

I've used two that work very well,

    Netgear FVS114

Microsoft doesn't support updates to 98 or ME anymore. You will NOT be better off changing to ME. It would be a complete waste of money.

eta: Windows 95,98,ME, and 2000 do not come with firewalls.

Its borderline worthless, but yes, XP does have a software firewall. XP's idea of a firewall, would be similar to locking your front door, but leaving the key hanging on the mailbox. Besides that, I'm not sure what prompted you to post this, but whatever it was, do you really trust anything coming out of Redmond.

As David pointed out, Win98 isn't being updated anymore, and you can bet there are security issues that haven't been addressed. If you're going to keep that PC online, you'd be very wise to get a hardware firewall. That will protect you from 99% of the riff raff.
