finally got around to getting my ccw permit here in VA. i took the online ccw class a few weeks ago. turned in my paperwork on march 15 and got the letter in the mail today saying i was approved and need to come to the courthouse to pick up the permit. left work early and picked her up. the whole process was a lot easier than expected. the online ccw class was a breeze and is highly recommend if your state allows it.

Online class? So do you have to "point and click" for the shooting part.. :)

On the process, sounds like the online course is the way to go. How exactly does that work? What happens if you "fail" the first time, can you go back and take the test again? I'm just assuming its some sort of multiple cchoice test.

    Congrats again..

it was a 6 part multiple choice test. you had to watch a video and then answer questions from it. the way its setup, you really cant fail the test. you could pause or replay the videos as much as you want. and in VA, you dont even have to shoot or touch a gun to get your ccw.

the course is $39.99 (at least the one i took was) you watch an hour long video. then take a 20 question multiple choice test. if you fail, then you should probably not be allowed to handle any firearm. really though, they will let you retake the test once for free i believe. after that i think it's like $10 to take it again. they have a 99% pass rate. shooting is not required in va.

it's maybe not the best way to teach firearms safety, but my father was a norfolk detective for over 25 years. he used to teach firearms training to people going through the academy. he taught me how to shoot, so i was just trying to find the cheapest way that would allow me to get my CHP.

if you've never handled a weapon and don't know anything about the laws surrounding them, then i would recommend you take an instructor-led course, but if that's not the case, then this is the cheapest alternative that is accepted in most localities throughout the state.

Yeah, the VA system under the current shall-issue system is pretty simple.

I never took a CCW class, but the online approach does sound quite convenient.

That said, I do recommend live-fire training from established, respected instructors!

congrats cliff! Welcome to the elite group of Virginians.
For the nomenclature nazis, Virginia issues a Concealed Handgun Permit (CHP), not a ccw.

Now go and join the VCDL www.vcdl.org and let the legislature hear your voice.

The online class is good for people that have shot and have the knowledge but do not the certificate that will be accepted as proof of that knowledge as it saves you time and money.

Congrats from a native and long time CHP holder. However for the past nearly three years, I have been open carrying as that is the default, or normal, mode of carrying a defensive arm in Virginia. But I still CC when I deem it in my interests to do so.
