That's me . Just wanted to introduce myself here and say hi to all of you guys. I hope you like having a European colleague around willing to provide a different point of view, and looking forward to having yours, too.

I have been on duties for nearly 20 years. I've been a few times on international deployments and worked with American officers and troops. Made great friends.

Feel free to ask whatever you like, it'll be my pleasure to answer.

So, what weapon(s) are you issued? What ammo?

Are you allowed, or required, to carry while off-duty?

Thanks for the warm welcome! ;)

Allowed to carry off-duty, yes. Required, no. Issued handgun is a Beretta 92FS (love it), but depending on what of the agency's specialties you work in you may be issued that one, an HK USPc (plain clothes people), or a Glock 17/19/26 for the tactical units, who also have Astra .357 revolvers, Sig-Sauer 3000 rifles and Accuracy AWP sniper rifles.

Shotguns are Franchi and Mossberg, 12 gauge. Sometimes we use sub-machine guns that are the old STAR Z70B (being replaced) or HK MP5/MP5k. There also HK G36k rifles and the old CETME C 7'62x51, used when it's necessary to deploy riot control gear at fairly long distances, or there's a need for powerful penetration power.

There are more "exotic" things in the inventory, but not that I get to see them every day, as the .50 cal Brownings/40mm grenache launchers of the maritime unit's boats.

Ammo is the bad news. Here in Europe there's a worrying reluctance to the use of JHP. There's no politician/chief that wants to be the one taking the decision to issue an ammo that is known to "cause more damage", then get the usual press crap. We are issued either FMJ or semi-jacketed flat nose, always in 9mm. The tactical guys do use hollow-points, so there's someone who knows they're the right thing to use, but they don't feel like issuing them. We've had our unions complaining about it and there's even a recent case of a bystander who lost an eye after an officer shot a crazed man who was trying to stab him. The bullet went through the BG, ricocheted and struck him in the eye. This citizen has sued the municipality (it happened in Madrid) and will win, for sure, getting what, looks like, will be a costly compensation. Tell them that this was much more unlikely to happen if HPs were issued, and again, they just won't listen. It's as stupid as it could be.

I have visited along the Costa del Sol several times (six or seven visits), and was very impressed by the beautiful country. Much like the USA, strangers tend to treat you indifferently, but once you meet a person, their friendliness seems quite genuine.
I am most surprised by the excellent way traffic flows in the countryside, on 4-lane highways there. People actually yield the left lane to faster traffic!

You have already added quality to my internet time, so it is me the one who's thankful ;). Actually, this CT forum has been a pleasant surprise. I'm quite comfortable here.

Glad you liked our highways here. It's not the first time I hear this coming from an American and it surprises me somehow. I haven't been to the US yet, but you know, just for what you see in the movies, looks like yours are broader. Certainly, people tends to be helpful here. You were, however, in a part of the country that is sooooo much used to receive a lot of tourism, so surely, it's true that they tend to be "indifferent", but not because it's their character to be like that, it's just that there are so many tourists. If you like sun, beach, and that kind of life, I'd suggest you try another province next time, Cádiz. If you liked Málaga, you'll love Cádiz.

Thanks for your warm welcome ;).

    Gracias!.
