Take some clean targets to the range, shoot both types at separate targets and judge for yourself which is best for your needs / shotgun. Shotguns are funny beasts, and each one patterns different with different loads. You just need to see what works for you.

Love me some Flight Control Wad, that's the only one I'll buy for HD.

Are they both copper plated shot? Which shot? Buckshot?

Are you actually talking about vital shok or power-shok?

Power-shok uses a 3 piece wad system with a granular buffering compound mixed with the shot. It begins its seperation right at the exit of barrel/choke tube.

Flightcontrol wad holds shot in a one piece cup designed to seperate at 10yards. Open choke.

In a realistic HD scenario, I’d imagine Ronin.45 is prob correct here though I was unaware of the tech differences.

In Home Defense the difference would be close to moot in terms of effectiveness. However, there are some small differences that might be of note.

The biggest is going to be the recoil. The Tactical will have less recoil, as well as less velocity.

I hate the flite control wad for HD buckshot. It negates one of the best aspects of a load of buckshot--you might as well shoot slugs.

Our local PD felt the same way about it.

The notion that really tight patterns are important comes from turkey shoots... Not self defense situations. I shoot shotguns a lot....and the last think I want from a shotgun is nice tight little patterns...for ducks or for bad guys. I want EFFECTIVE patterns that give me the best COVERAGE of my target at expected ranges. This characteristic of a shotgun is an advantage of the weapon system. I'm not talking about clearing halls of not having to aim or any of the other garbage you will throw back at me. I'm talking about putting a decent pattern center of mass so that I maximize my ability to hit a vital organ or part of the CNS. If the target moves 3" left I still have that hit capability... I'm sure your bad guys stand still... One reason the shotgun is a superb close combat weapon because it has the ability to deliver a brutally devastating blow spread out over a large section of the bad guys vital area. Use a flite control wad shell and you just turned it into a rifle...what's the point?

Flite control is great if you want to go on a southern deer hunt an kill deer with buckshot at 25-40 yards.

Whatever 00 buck Walmart has on sale is going to be just as good as your fancy pants buckshot.

This would be obvious to anyone that has ever shot anything at 5-10 yards with 00 buckshot.

00 buck for black bear -- BLACK BEAR!

But you need a special wad to control the pattern when shooting a human intruder inside your home.
