I'm not judging the new round, just saying that with so many good premium JHP self-defense rounds available already the Hydra-Shok will have to be a real improvement for me to purchase any.

Is the 15" penetration in calibrated ballistics gel repeatable enough to demonstrate a decided advantage over XTP? Or Gold Dot, HST, and Golden Saber. These rounds often show similar penetration in calibrated tests.

Maybe we'll see other premium round prices drop if there's a mad rush to the new Federal line. I hope so.

Probably not available in 9mm, which is already way to awesome! :eek:uttahere:
According to the linked article 9mm is what they are rolling it out in first.

Likely so it will be easier to keep up with demand since no one shoots the 9mm since it is so underpowered /sarcasim

Not even available to the public yet, and already we have people pooh-poohing it.

I usually wait until a product has actually hit the market and has been proven to be a poor performer before I knock it. But apparently not everyone shares that same philosophy.

I hope it does well. Don't see anything wrong at all with having a wider variety of effective JHP options.

Why bother?
The "why" question always boils down to this: Federal is trying to increase its revenue stream.

As for the consumer, more choices and marketplace competition are a good thing.

Win/win.

What I would like to see is a return of an expanding FMJ round.

Just another sales gimmick from big ammo.
Without "big ammo", you would be throwing rocks at the bad guy.

Agreed on choices/competition and expanding FMJ as an option.

If it's just going to be premium priced 20 round boxes I'm sure most of us will pass considering you can get HST/Gold Dot/Ranger/Golden Saber/etc in well priced 50 round boxes online.

If it does offer consistently deep penetration and hold up really well, like an XTP, there could be some 'informed' demand for it based on that, but, as mentioned above, it seems destined for Walmart and other mass-marketed small-volume (they buy 2 boxes ever) general gun owning (but no so much enthusiasts) public

Looks like it's a deeper perpetrator than HST. I'll be interested in seeing tests.

tnoutdoors9? We miss you.
I miss those less after reading the profession's opinion/experience on how those test medias are not analogous to the 'real deal' ballistics gel. The chrono results are nice sometimes though
