It didn't install successfully but now the computer fan runs on high a lot more often. Anybody successfully installed this update? If so, what does it do?

Installed. All it does is tie up the puter for a few hours.

The privacy ship sailed a long time ago. Even in the 1980s the CEO of Sun Microsystems noted that people need to get used to the fact their privacy is gone.

However that still didn't answer the question in the OP.

That's the thing - it did tie up the computer for a few hours, but failed to install. Maybe I'll try again. Did you notice a difference?

Mine usually fail 10x before they install.

I have better luck with manual downloads but even then they are not 100%.

Microsoft offered it to me free, and I refused. Glad I did, as all I need is a screwed up laptop.

I've had occasional install failures, but did not ever notice extra fan activity (presumably because CPU is running a lot) after a good or failed install. Usually if I re-install a few days later, it installs ok.

Make sure you at least use Windows backup of your files to a separate hard drive or cloud before you do one of these. AND NEVER STOP THE INSTALL, even if it looks like it is dead!!! I once killed a machine (had to restore it).

Who knows why it failed? But you need to be sure you plug in a laptop because I've had these run over 2 hours, sometimes with no indication whatsoever that it was still working (no disk activity, dark screen).

Any more, I just dedicate 3 hours to sit and watch it go through its count-ups, reboots, and long dark screens.

Have not seen anything work any better, but guess is that 90+% of 'upgrade' has to do with bloatware and services they want you to use. it could just be working harder after the upgrade doing more stuff in the background (bring up task manager and see the cpu and disk percentages).

Thanks guys, the second time was the charm as far as installation goes. Extra fan activity is still going on. This has happened before with a similar update, but went away after a day or so.

    Check for bloatware.

I did it today, surprisingly it went well but took about 4 hours.

Major feature updates reset all your settings, add new services and turn things on or off so make sure and check.

Mine took about the same. All my privacy settings appear unchanged. The only change I've noticed (other than increased fan activity) is the color of the tool bar on the bottom of the screen changed to light grey from black.
