Oh man. I thought it expired in late 2010, nope late 2009.

The only big travel scheduled is a trip to Puerto Rico in mid-April. IIRC no passport is needed to go there.

    1. How long will it take me to get the expired passport - respired or replaced? This one took less than a week. But that was before 911 - it also cost me a couple hundred bucks to get it done that fast..

    2. Am I right about not needing a passport to visit Puerto Rico?

Takes about 30 days to get, but I'd do it right now. The closer you get to summer the longer it takes, as applications increase.

When we got ours last year mine took 5 weeks and my wifes took 6weeks. They were sent off at the same time and one went to AZ i think and the other to TX. or something like that. During the time when I would check on the status, all they wanted to do was push that dang expediting fee of $75 on top all the other fees. Its all a crock of crap.

The process is somewhat faster if you had a passport previously (even though it is expired). I renewed an expired passport in 2007. IIRC, it took just over 5 weeks to get the new one.

Just confirmed that with the travel agent at my wife's company. No PP needed for travel to or from PR. That said I'm sending in my app for renewal today if I can get the pics taken.

For an additional fee there is a fast track option. I can't remember the exact amount, but it does expedite the process considerably.

Basically the the non-emergency expedite fee is $60.

So it's overnight fees out to Philadelphia PA + $75 PP fee + $60 expedite fee + $14.96 return overnight fees.

Congrats, your new passport will contain a RFID chip. You get a handy ID card to go along with it, also electronic.

I got my last passport the same day. Logged onto the website the day prior, made an appointment for 10am the next day, showed up with ticket in hand, went out for lunch, returned at 2pm picked up new passport.

This was in...Stamford or Norwalk, CT a few years ago.

You do however, always need positive ID to board, or they give you the ultra deep body probe.

Happened to a bud of mine PRE-9/11 trying to go to Hawaii. He was not allowed on the flight because he had no ID.

I understand running your passport in a microwave oven for about 6 seconds will kill the RFID chip with no other discernable effects.
