I will be looking for some G17 mags. Are there fakes and if so what do you look for? Also is there anything else I need to know? Are all G17 mags compatible with gen3's and 4's? Thanks.

There are different makes for the mags. I stick with Glock OEM. All the mags are compatible even with the Gen4 as long as you keep the mag release on the same side as the gen,1,2,3, side,

There are Korean made ones that are close to Glock but have a few issues. To insure you get real ones buy from a Glock dealer. Also all glock mags will work in gen 4 if set up for a right handed person. I think theres ambi release Glocks and they will need mags with the cutout in the front.

Simply put . . . For SD/HD purposes, I would use the factory Glock magazines. I have never had any issues with Glock OEM mags.

For range purposes, I think that non Glock mags would be fine. However, I would not want to test their reliability during a potential critical scenario.

The easiest way to tell them apart - the Glock mags have the GLOCK name on them. The others generally have the caliber markings only.
