The rescue was 23 days after the large 10 May 1972 air battle in which Steve Ritchie scored the first of his 5 Mig-21 kills to be an ace. The 4 plane flight was lead by Bob Lodge and his back seater, Robert Locher who as a team had 2 Mig-21 kills at the time and had just shot down their 3rd Mig-21 when a Mig-19 flown by Nguyen Manh Tung blew their Phantom out of the sky. In a twist of fate, on landed, Tung ran out of fuel on landing, crashed and was killed.

Anyway, Bob Lodge did not eject and was killed when his F-4 hit the ground but Locher made it out. Steve Ritchie tells the story of the rescue in fine fashion.!
