It's happened several times over the years where I'll make a new friend and eventually learn something about them that I had never suspected or found really interesting.

Buddy of mine used to write and produce documentaries in the 70's and worked with a few celebrities. Another lady I know grew up in a very dysfunctional situation and her childhood home is now a state park.

Was talking to another friend today and found out he was a member of a death metal band in the UK in the 80's and 90's that was part of the early rise of the genre in Europe.

He's the most mild-mannered little chap with an English accent and I've known him for a couple of years.

His group was Chapel of Rest. Here's a video for those of you who like that sort of thing. I don't, but he was the lead guitarist and I can appreciate his skill.

Any stories of friends you have who have an interesting past?

    Very timely.

An older gentleman in the neighborhood I became friends with several years ago passed away today. I drive a Porsche, he drove Classic Jaguars. We had fun with our cars.

I had known him a quite a while before I found out he retired as a Brigadier General, USAF Medical. Then worked with the Surgeon Generals office.

I was in a friends office years ago and was looking at pics on the wall.

He had a few with Pres. Clinton. Turns out he was in the White House communications office for a couple of years. He filled military post and really enjoyed Bill's stories and hanging out with him.

He never bragged about it or mentioned it too me..

I'm more concerned about what my friends might find out about me!
The most docile, friendliest guy I knew in school is now in prison for murder. Didn't know he even had a temper.

Read in the local news a few years ago that an old friend was arrested, and subsequently convicted, for attempted murder. I *really* didn't see that one coming as he was a pretty stand-up dude. I hadn't spoken to him in quite some time but I guess in the intervening years he developed a rather acute meth habit which eventually led to him getting stabby with some other meth head **** bag during a pre-planned robbery. Meth... ****ing meth, man.

I have a friend who was in the Secret Service. He went to China with President Nixon - there's a picture of him in LIFE Magazine walking across the tarmac in Beijing next to the president.

Another friend was a P-47/P-51 pilot in Europe during WWII. I met him by publishing his memoirs, and we became good friends after that. He passed away a couple of years ago, at 92. Some great stories he had.

I had a client a number of years back who became a good friend as we worked on a joint project together for 8 months or so, and towards the end of that effort I had invited him to go to a local shooting range with a group of friends from my own company. He said he had some shooting experience, but hadn't done any real shooting in a few years. He was excited, however, to go hit the range with us.

Long story short, this guy goes to the range with us and proceeds to start shooting at a level of competence and skill far beyond either myself or any of my other shooting buddies. After watching him chew out the X-ring with every toy we could put in his hands, I asked him how long he'd been shooting and specifically what kind of training he had.

Turns out this mild-mannered, middle aged IT Manager was a West Point grad and had been a Special Forces Team Leader in the 70s and early 80s. He was also part of the failed raid to try to free the hostages in Iran back when Carter was President.

I found out my best friend since childhood was a heroin addict/alcoholic.

That was devastating. He's still alive surprisingly, a lot OD and die by his age or sooner.

I am a Freemason. I petitioned the local Lodge when we moved to Washington. It took me about 3 years to become a Master Mason. Each stage (3) had an initiation rite. I mentioned that I had become a Mason and was undergoing my "Third Degree" to become a Master. A friend we had known for many years said he was coming up to visit at that time. Turns out, he contacted the Master of the Lodge and volunteered to escort me through my Third Degree. (This is an honor==Benjamin Franklin escorted Voltaire through his Third Degree while in Paris during the Am. Revolution). Woody told me he had been trying for ten years to get me to join! (You cannot be asked to become a Mason=it must be your own decision). He traveled across the country to escort me!

A friend of mine was a professional musician and played Bass (on tour) for Ray Price, the country music legend.
