There is a reason that I avoid fast food, coffee shops, and any food related places that employ young people that think the world owes them.

You would assume that this sort of situation (i.e.: an employee spitting in a customer's food) is created by an impolite or unpleasant customer, rather than a psychopathic employee. I wouldn't. Just last month, I walked into a Tim Hortons, and immediately noticed that the employee was smiling, and watching me in a way that is atypical. Oh, what's this? I wondered whether I knew her from somewhere, although I was confident that I didn't; such was the way she was looking at me. She took the order, and I paid, leaving her a ~60% tip, and then waited for her to fill the order. She didn't fill it in front of me, she went to the other end of the store, by the drive-through counter, with her back to me. I waited, and waited and waited, with her back to me. Finally, she turned around, smiling, looking directly at me as she returned. "Enjoy your coffeee", she said, looking me in the eye in a way that is atypical. You're crazy, I thought. She didn't do anything to your coffee, I thought. Why would she?, I asked myself. Uncertain, I decided to sit down, in the store, so that I could watch whether or not she would be watching me (as I prepared to drink it). She was watching. You're crazy, I thought. Why would she? I removed the lid and immediately saw a tell-tale foamy 1" glob floating in the middle of the steaming coffee. I replaced the lid, tossed the coffee in the trash, and left. She watched me leave. Why would she? I have no idea, but I am confident that it had nothing to do with me. It was all her.

She had decided to do it from the very first moment she saw me. (If not before.)

    Strong possibility.

Words of wisdom, but I suspect being nice doesn't keep stuff from happening. People are actually bragging online about what they do to our food.

Hmmm....very LEO in that town should spit in a cup and the offender should have to drink it while standing on the town green at noon.

How do you know which young people think the world owes them? Do you go to places that employ young people who don't think the world owes them? You don't have to be a young person to feel trapped and frustrated in a dead end server job.

If anyone ever tampers with your food or drink, you have my full permission to hurt them in any way you feel appropriate. Use your imagination. Sky's the limit.

You make valid points, but I actually just avoid fast food altogether, so no analysis of the hired helps attitude is required.
I really don't feel that I am missing anything wonderful by staying away from places that will hire those that can only get a dead end server job.

I just don't think that azzhats that will mess with a customer's food are limited to just fast food places. If I were paranoid about restaurant employees messing with my food, I don't think I'd eat out at all.

It goes far beyond restaurants, but it really comes down to risk assessment.
A person is at much higher risk at a place like Dunkin Donuts or McDonalds, than they are at a place without a drive through.
