On the eve of Trump's inauguration, the first of many gifts from Mexico? Or merely a coincidence? :patriot::elephant:

Notorious Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman is being extradited to the US, the Mexican government confirmed on Thursday.

Mexican media reported he was at Ciudad Juarez airport

Mr Guzman is wanted in the US on charges of smuggling vast amounts of drugs into the country.

The leader of the Sinaloa cartel was facing two extradition requests - one from California and another from Texas, where he could face the death penalty.

A Mexican government source told Reuters he was being taken to New York.

Last year he was moved to a prison in Ciudad Juarez, which lies just across the border from El Paso in Texas, but authorities at the time denied the move was a precursor to extradition.

Mr Guzman has been fighting the move but his appeals were rejected.

He has escaped from two Mexican high-security jails in the past

Any max prison is light years ahead of Mexican prisons. He doesn't have the resources on hand and the guards aren't as easily bought or corrupted.

I'm sure Rikers Island could easily hold him for the rest of his days. I'd imagine after his court hearings they will put him in a really secure facility.

And, there is a idea hidden within this story...I believe this is a subtle nod to Pres Trump, by the Mexican Govt that [they] are willing to work with the new admin.

Well, if anyone sees John McClane in the area, get some cameras rolling.

It's off the table. The extradition was done with the agreement that the death penalty would not be sought. But they DO want $14B from the cartel.

All the money wasted on this guy and the notoriety, too bad he can't simply be smoked and dumped in the ocean.

So it's true that the War on Drugs is only about the .gov making money. If an animal like "El Chapo" doesn't get the death penalty, no one should.

Let's find the largest convict in the system, and give him a spicy Latino toy to play with.

I took it as a slight to Trump as it happened the day before the Inauguration. If they had waited a day I would agree with you.

Much like the Iranian hostage release.

$14 B would be a nice start for building a wall. Thanks E.C.

Hey ... Trump didn't say "exactly" how he was going to get the money and E.C. Is from Mexico sooooo....

If they did this a year ago, obummer would have pardoned him.
