I have been enjoying watching the original Dragnet series on one of our local TV stations. The series aired from 1951 - 1959. It aired again from 1967 - 1970.

Jack Webb was planning to bring the series back a third time and had written several episodes when he suddenly died from a heart attack on December 23,1982 at the age of 62.

Here is a classic skit from 1968 when Jack appeared on the Johnny Carson show.

I love some of the old Johnny Carson shows!

    Been watching Dragnet in Netflix!

I love when they are dealing with the hippies. . They always have the exact same psychedelic music playing on the stereo.

Great show. I believe Jack Webb is the only non-LEO to ever receive Police Honors at a funeral.

Funny thing is he never actually said that on the show.

He said similar things, but that particular phrasing is from another person that somehow got attributed to Webb along the way.

There is more than one story on how Jack came up with up badge number 714. He was a huge baseball fan and decided to use the number of home runs that Babe Ruth hit which was 714.

There was a police officer assigned to escort the badges to and from filming for Dragnet and Adam 12. The patrol cars you see in Adam 12 were bought with the LAPD, when the LAPD bought cars the studio would pay for several extras that they could use as well.

That's the first thing that came to my mind when I though about it. I was a kid at the time.

Another story is that Webb wanted to use badge No. 777 for luck, bet he decided it looked better to at the last two digits and use the result. 7+7=14, so it became 714.

According to people who should know, Jack Webb was a very loyal and true to his friends.

For the entire runs of his shows, there were often repeat character actors, who appeared in any number of episodes.

Kent McCord of Adam 12 also has kind words concerning Mr. Webb, and his loyalty.

In fact even after his divorce, he featured his ex-wife (Julie London) in the television show "Emergency".

Of all things, I admire loyalty most.

Dragnet actually started out as a radio show on NBC in June of 1949. A total of 314 radio shows aired from 1949 until 1957.

It seems that in the second edition of Dragnet in the late 1960s, Jack Webb's primary goal was to stamp out the hippies. The Blue Boy episode is one of the most famous from this era. The scenes of the hippie parties beggar description.

Maybe we didn't watch the same show. I remember it being said nearly every show. Harry Morgan even used it several times before he went to Mash.

SiriusXM Radio Classics (channel 82) periodically plays old Dragnet radio shows with Jack Webb. Some of the story lines from the radio shows reappear in later TV episodes.

Great show! In addition to Dragnet, I'm also a fan of Adam 12. Classics!

    This one was hilarious

The tv show was decades before my time but I really dug watching it when I was a pre teen. They had a remake on tv a few years ago starring Al Bundy but I never got around to watching it before it was cancelled.
