Heh...one of my neighbors is a cop, and he takes his cruiser home. Every time he comes home at the end of his shift, he removes his patrol rifle from the trunk and brings it inside the house with him, without fail. He'll be damned if he's gonna put himself on the hook for a $1500 RRA AR.

Securing your firearms was a requirement where I worked...

Policy change coming up. Who would have ever thunk some scoff law would break into a house or car and steal firearms displayed for easy picking.

This is becoming more prevalent in the public's eye, and reasonably so.

Not only have agencies started to enact policies, but a law just went into effect here in CA regarding this issue.

The amended law linked below, which now applies to both active and honorably retired LE. (Violation is an infraction, and not an inexpensive one)

To be fair, the AR was in a secured metal box that was pried open with a crowbar and the unmarked SWAT car was stolen in one apt. complex and dumped in another sans subgun.

Obviously all cop cars should be equipped with TL-2 level safes.

But realistically, securing long guns indoors is probably the answer to this dilemma. It's a pain in the ass for the cops, but seems like it's becoming necessary.

Yeah, just parking police veh's behind a tall fence doesn't seem to stop auto burg's and the loss of racked weapons. Parking them inside a secured structure is better, but removing the weapons and securing them inside an armory, or a residence overnight (in whatever manner is required by policy), would seem prudent.

This sort of thing is a PR nightmare, whether it's a regular weapon or an NFA firearm. More complicated paperwork if a NFA firearms takes a walk, though.

My thought continues to remain that if one would not leave his Rolex or an envelope with $850 in the car overnight than one probably should not leave a gun (or handheld radio) in the car overnight.

The 1934 NFA was enacted to outlaw or ban machineguns, sawed off shotguns and silencers. The big thing was that gangters and outlaws didn't buy their guns. They stole them from national guard armory and police dept.

Today 80% of all guns used in crimes are not owned by the criminals. The police have better stuff if you have the baby makers.

Having a marked patrol car in you driveway, in my mind, is sort of like having an NRA sticker or other gun related bumper stickers on your car in your driveway. It just screams " look for a gun here in this car or this house". All my cars are clean.

    Willie,

I didn't see where they said it took a crowbar or where it was in a metal box. Where did you see it?

This is what I read: “They pried a short-barreled AR rifle out of his gun lock,” said Eustis Police Cpl. Sarah Coursey. “It was a very bold move. I mean this marked patrol car was parked right next to his front door.”

One early report said it was in a metal box. May or may not have been accurate reporting early on. I never saw any pics. I haven't seen any reports that said either had been found yet.
