Shooting my S&W Shield 9 and Shield 40 today. A friend
wanted to try the 40 out so I told him sure, grab a mag and
have at it. I set him up a new target while he grabbed one of
my loaded mags out of my range bag. He loaded the pistol,
racked the slide and bang: FTE, went into the drill Rack, Tap,
and Shoot. Again bang: FTE. Now, I'd been shooting
both guns and they were running like a Swiss watch. I
know he wasn't a limp wrist-er so I took the gun and rack, tapped and FTF. WTF! HUH?
Ok, something is wrong. Dropped the mag, ejected the
round and HOLY CRAP! It was the 9mm mag loaded with 9mm ammo in my Shield 40.
Well, the problem was easily solved. Use 40 S&W in a 40
and 9mm in a 9mm. My friend was extremely embarrassed
and swore me to secrecy. Well, I agreed I'd never tell
anyone what HE did. Didn't promise not to tell what
    happened.:tongueout:
Here's a pic of the two shell casings that did fire. Stripped
the 40 down and cleaned it. No damage and I didn't
expect to see any. The black marks on each case are
    splits.

    Glad all is well

This sort of thing seems to happen fairly often around here lately. :dunno:

I have an easy fix for this. I shoot 9 and 45. Got rid of the 40. Problem solved.:D

    Sent from my two-story outhouse.

You know, I have a glock 27 and a conversion barrel to shoot 9mm. I've had them at the range multiple times swapping between 40 and 9mm and never had an issue. I keep track of the mags and I only have one caliber ammo on the bench at a time. That said, I was shooting a 1911 once and had a FTE. I check it out find a nice ballooned .40 case stuck. I check the mag and everything is .45. I was shooting new factory ammo, but somehow I ended up with a .40 round and didn't even notice it when I loaded the mag. I felt pretty stupid for a good while afterwards, but never did figure out where I picked up the 40 round.

All jokes aside, I'd be all for that.

    ...never liked the 40S&W, personally.

Wipe the cases down with Flitz and a couple of paper towels, they'll be as good as new.....

Yep, my buddy showed up for IDPA practice with his G22, and loaded mags for his G34. He started shooting and had to "rack" the next round into the chamber after every shot. He actually shot a full 17 round mag this way. We found those funny looking "double diameter" cases laying around. After checking the gun, no problems found. The range RO let him keep on shooting, thinking that it was a light load situation, not enough omph to cycle the action, which happens from time to time.

You have to wonder how many 1000s of time that has occurred. I have not seen any reports of a 9mm in a .40S&W causing any real issues but I bet there might be some out there. The .40 S&W in a .45ACP happens often as well.

Bet it has happened more tnan we'll ever know. I'll be painting a number
    "9" on my. 9 mm and a 40 on my 40 S&W mags tomorrow. While I'm
at it, I may just number all my mags according to caliber.

    Simple and it works. :)

I have 1911s in .38 Supe and .45ACP, it could happen with them as well I guess.

    :wavey:

MY story is the same, save that "friend" is in my version "wife" and would involve trying to shoot .380 in a 9mm. And _I_ was the one loading the mags and pistols!
