Don’t game the system. The system will win.

A friends daughter (spoiled precocious little brat) will not be graduating high school with a diploma. This is the same kid I talked about a few years ago who got kicked out of elementary school and into a special needs school because she started making up her own words for things and expected the teacher to use her words instead of English. They thought it was some sort of dissociative disorder. They caught on fast and the next year she was back in regular school.

She will receive a Certificate of Completion. Since she was a little kid she tried to game the system. Mom 100% enabled her. Always found a way to pass but not do any work. It means the school acknowledges that she showed up for class but hasn’t completed the requirements for a diploma.

Always wanted teachers to assign alternative (easy) work just for her.

Got the flu and wanted to use the home school program for kids with critical illnesses. Still didn’t do the work.

Got into the remedial classes because she flunked the regular classes. Got kicked out because the special education teacher caught on to her game. She aced some diagnostic tests.

Got accepted into the new online high school program but didn’t do the work. Video games, social media and anime didn’t count as school work. Got kicked out.

She got warning after warning but mom always went to bat for her precious little angel. Mom got warnings from the school and social services but nothing happened because there was never evidence of abuse. The kid just insisted on playing games with the system instead of working.

USAF told her they won’t accept the certificate. Period. The Army said they could accept it under special circumstances. Usually foreign nationals who have not been here long and they REALLY want to enlist. But they must score extremely well on the ASVAB. She got a 22.

Her military plan is shot. No university or college will touch her.

The school has two plans. #1 Night school in two classes until graduation. Must pass. Walk with her class and take the certification. Summer school. Must pass. Return to high school as a “Super Senior” and graduate with the class of 2021 if she passes. #2 After graduation take GED classes and pass.

She is refusing to take the deal.

In the end you can’t beat the system.

I taught school 20 years ago. Mom is asking me how to force the school to give her a diploma. I said take the deal. They say it would be too embarrassing to return as a super senior. I think she is afraid of doing the work and pissed that she didn’t win in the end. Now they are in panic mode.

She has a young brother with some actual disabilities but he is on track to graduate.

I warner her 6 years ago. Thanks for letting me unload.

    IMO, thats the parents.

My wife buddy teaches in the Oakland unified school district. They had a software based learning system, "Teach to one" look it up ....revolutionary and it will totally change schools in another decade or two....even though the Teachers union hates it because we will need less teachers.

The software tailors the lesson plan to each kid....pretty slick. Then it can analyze what each kid isn't comprehending...and gives them an addl. module for that.

Well guess what...the kids that had no family structure backing them just floundered. The kids with a support structure of engaged parents excelled...like 3 years of math grades in one year excel.

They had to drop the system as it was making the lowest 30% look worse....so now the top 20% have to slog along with them. Thats our teacher union at work.

Unconnected but interesting study in Great Britain; The black kids were out performing the whites in math. Lots of hand wringing- how can that be from the folks claiming lower IQ from African races. Nope, its not about that...its support structure....and with backing any kid can excel.

    .....

100%. Mom backed the kid. My old buddy let it happen. Didn’t like it but did NOTHING to stop it.

He did put his foot down when it came to their son. He is doing fine even with Aspergers and an auditory processing disorder.

We argued about it years ago.

I’m just mad seeing a smart kid go to waste.

Agree with the others. Parents not forcing her to do the work. There are consequences for ones actions. She is now finding out what those are.

Wow. I don’t think I could score a 22 on the ASVAB if I tried. And I’m not the smartest guy you ever met.

I really hope real life kicks her in the butt. Hard enough that she gets a GED and goes to community college. Good kid but stubborn beyond belief.

I think the Corp only requires a 24 on the assfab. A guy I graduated with couldn't score high enough to join. He was the big football hero. Like Judge smales said " the world needs ditch diggers too"

But you need the HS diploma. The Marines have a 5% annual cap on GED recruits. Certificate of attendance or certificate of completion are not acceptable.

I’ve done a crash course on this garbage this weekend.

Strangely, you seem to have learned more about it than the people who had this as Plan A have learned in the several years this was their core plan.

At some point, she's gotta do the work. She can take the deal the school offered, or find a GED-to-Community College pathway, most places have one, or something similar. But not a bit of it's going to make an ounce of difference if she's not going to do the work.

Till she steps up, which is going to be a painful and difficult task, given how much I assume she hasn't learned along the way, she's effectively a high school dropout, with all the prospects and bright future that suggests.

Whether you say that to her/her mom in so many words is a judgement call, of course. At some point, taking the time to criticize or tell tough truths reflects a belief in their ability to do better.

Might well just be that all it's worth it to you to do is say 'tough situation, good luck'.

It is a shame her mother spoiled her. Kid will have a rough road ahead as an adult. If she is refusing the deal then she better grow up fast and come up with a plan. Maybe she can go to college some day but for now she would be better off getting into Job Corps and getting a GED and a trade. Even if her parents have money she could probably get in if they set her up in an apartment and booted her out. The sooner she leaves the nest and gets away from her mother the better off she will be.

Haven’t thought about Job Corps. I think some of the school districts have programs like that also. Thanks.

And for her parents having money. No. Seriously no. Back in the day the bain of my existence was them not having money. Or stable jobs. Lots of stories and bad memories there.

Kid's got issues, but parents have totally dropped the ball. Take the phone & video games away, #1. That's a constant battle even with teens who have the ability and desire to do well. Throw in ADHD or ADD or any sort of learning disability or personality disorder (and I suspect there is something going on with this kid) and there is no chance the kid is going to make it without good parental support and development of personal discipline.

How the heck did she think she was going to like the military as a career if she doesn’t like doing what other people order her to do?!

It’s possible to beat the system, drop out at 16 get your G.E.D immediately, go to a community college. Do well transfer to a 4 year school or military. Saves you 2 years.

of course that takes intelligence, discipline and drive which clearly this person lacked.

I used to test and counseling individuals with disabilities for jobs, careers, training, college, etc. Some people just test poorly whether it's due to lack of knowledge, lack of trying, fear of tests, fear of trying, fear of succeeding, LD, ADD, ADHD, bad eyesight, hearing voices, whatever.

Some people test really, really well but make one bad decision after another day after day.

Just goes to prove, the world is full of people. :)
