I'm looking at registering a domain name. The name I want is available in a .ws ending. Is there anything better or worse about .ws or anyof the other choices?

Worse? Some people will just type in .com by default and go to the wrong site. Maybe they'll remember your correct address after hitting the wrong site, maybe they won't.

So you want a .ws domain name?

    Western Samoa?

    For what reason praytell?

To cybersquat on a domain in the hopes of cashing in?

Maybe a .com or a .net.

Since the U.S. has most of the .com, .net and .org domains covered maybe someone in a 100 years might decide to put .ws on the end. I wouldn't count on it unless you are selling something very exclusive.

I'm not trying to run a scam. I was just going to register my family name so I could have a stable email address while I surf ISPs to take advantage of their introductory rate. Everything but .ws .name and .TV are taken. I just wasnt sure if there is anything wrong (other than the popularity of .com) with the other endings.

There is nothing wrong with a .ws suffix. Since you're not selling anything, and are not concerned with internet traffic, I say 'Go for it'. Naturally, the price should be a tad cheaper than a .com or .net.

I see no reason not to do it. It's just a hobby for you. It's not like you're trying to make a living from this website.

Sorry, I didn't mean to insinuate that you were running a scam. Nothing wrong with cybersquatting unless someone wants to wrestle away the domain name from you. ;)

Have you tried registering something like "www.TheClampetFamily.com?"

No WS does not necessarily mean Web Site.

That domain originally signifies the island nation of Western Samoa.

Here is the link that describes who, what, when and why.

Have they created a .porn extension yet? ;e

I ran into the same issue about a month ago, wanted to create a family website, but couldn't find one in a .com, .net. I just gave up, but I guess I could use one of the other extensions.

Thanks! I learned something new. When I signed up, my domain registrar said .WS was for WebSite. I understand the country code designation. Like .TV :)
