my girlfriend and I are looking to get a pup here shortly,

most likely going to be a humane society (pound) rescue ,

gonna try to get a younger one, puppy-1year,

i dont want to end up with the monsters that others have, so i wish to train him as best i can, but i cant afford to do the expensive training classes or pay to have someone take the dog,

im looking at good books to read up on before i get the dog,

I personally think that basic books for the fundamentals don't really vary that much. Dog basics are not that complicated, but a lot of people want to get their book published. I work in publishing, so the differences I see are author popularity, marketing, book tours, etc. Any library should have some good basic books.

The approaches for advanced dog training can be different. That would be for specific functions.

Honestly, for novice dog owners I really like the PetsMart "headstart" program. They teach you, hands on, in a social setting how to train your dog using positive reinforcement.

It's about a hundred dollars and I think it's a 6 or 8 week program but, it's been very well spoken of (and the results have been visible) by everyone I know who has done it.

Can't believe no one has suggested this yet. "No Bad Dogs: The Woodhouse Way"

Basically, anything by Barbara Woodhouse. She's a pioneer in dog training and paved the way for all the dog trainers today. From what I recall she doesn't really do the "reward with treats" thing that so many people do today on shows. Check her out, she's no nonsense but keep in mind that if you're too soft and not the type to take charge then she isn't for you.
