Coming form someone who does not know the difference between a show dog and a working dog, I'll take that as a compliment.

    Thanks!

I just got my pup from a shelter Sunday and he is well on his way to being house trained already. I have paid attention and taken notes on when he eats and drinks and also when he needs to eliminate.

He gets a measured amount of food and all the water he wants. When he is loose in the house he is supervised. When I can't watch him he goes in his crate or out to the fenced yard. He seems as though you and your wife don't want to put any effort in. Any kids that we should be worried about?

Thanks for some really helpful advice, especially relevant to me is Bruno.
Picked-up our baby Shepard yesterday. The advice is already been implemented.

Didn't Paris Hilton have a dog that just turned up "missing"?

There's lots of people in any Wal Mart parking lot who'd love to be given a free dog.

One thing that helps is to use a product called Odoban and you can get it in 5 gallon buckets at Sam's Club. If your dog can smell where another dog or even where he has gone he will continue to go there so my wife and I have found you first must eliminate all previous odor to begin training your young dog to go outside. If he makes a mistake use the Odoban. It helps.

Crate training is the way to handle it. There is too much space in your house for the dog to adapt to. Make his world smaller, get to know his habits and if he poops after he eats, then be ready to escort him to the door. He needs plenty of "Good Boy!" reinforcement.

My Toy Fox Terrier, Jake was difficult to house break. I hung up a small bell and rang it every time I let him outside. He also got a small treat for doing right. Soon, he bumped the bell with his nose and rang it himself when he needed to go.

Later, he realized that his collar tags made a "jingle", so he quit ringing the bell and shook to make his tags ring like a bell! The little bugger figured out that his jingle tags worked the same as his little bell! When he wants something to this day, he rings his jingle tags.

Your dog wants to do well. He just doesn't know what that will take. It's up to you to show him!

The best way to get your dog to accept you as the Alpha is to walk him on a leash. Start with a short leash and refuse to accept his alpha behavior of pulling on the leash. The leash is not there to restrain the dog. It only lets him know what you set as his boundary. If he pulls on the leash....stop! Don't proceed until he accepts your commands. I say "Stay with Daddy" Some say "Heal". Pick a word or phrase to mean that and be consistent. That command means "Stay with me!" Repeat it often as they have short attention spans.

On your walks, let him sniff pee and poop and he'll love you for it! Stop occasionally and make him stop, too. He will soon accept that you are the BOSS!

    Good luck!
