No, I don't believe in karma or any such thing.

We are just animals that are born, live a while, then die. What happens during that time is just dumbass luck, good and bad.

I tend to believe in karma.

It is how I rationalize surviving an injury that kills and cripples virtually everyone else. That or it was just freak luck and I was too stubborn to f'n die. Karma makes more sense.

I have a number of stories of other pilots being killed while doing exactly the same thing as me.

And several times, when the helicopter I was supposed to be flying crashed, killing everyone on board. One, I heard the passengers screaming as the helicopter fell (the pilot squeezed the transmit button but didn't say anything.

Because of these many times that I lived, while others died, it would be easy to call it "karma" but I don't buy it.

Interesting question. I only know how I've lived my life. I've always tried to give more than I received. Trying to stay on the plus side of the cosmic balance sheet. It is one of the ways I rationalize it. I'm thankful every day I wake up. Another theory is maybe I'm a lucky SOB, Maybe the planets aligned perfectly, airlifted to the right hospital with the perfect medical team at the perfect time, maybe I'm a bit tougher and more f'n stubborn, others tell me god has other plans for me (personally I don't think I'm that special).

Do you live with survivor guilt? How do you handle it and rationalize it?

The truth is I try not to think about it a lot. It isn't pleasant. Karma in the spiritual sense fits as well as anything.

I am not sure about the timeline or time line and how it plays out in earthly life but there is also Mathew 18:18 "Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Nah....plenty of people live a life of doing evil things with no accountability, plenty of good people catch the short end of the stick. Karma is just another human creation.

If you believe death is the end, yes.

    YMMV

"The total amount of suffering per year in the natural world is beyond all decent contemplation. During the minute that it takes me to compose this sentence, thousands of animals are being eaten alive, many others are running for their lives, whimpering with fear, others are slowly being devoured from within by rasping parasites, thousands of all kinds are dying of starvation, thirst, and disease. It must be so. If there ever is a time of plenty, this very fact will automatically lead to an increase in the population until the natural state of starvation and misery is restored. In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference."

No. Karma is not a thing.

Humans constantly look for patterns and we look for causality. It is our super power. But sadly we sometime miss use it.

We all do bad things sometimes and we all do good things sometimes.

Bad things happen to all of us. And good things happen to all of us.

And on top of all that how we interpret something as being good or bad has a lot to do with our frame of mind and our expectations.

So Karma is an attempt to find causality in the patterns of our lives. Patterns that do not imperically exist

I'd like to believe in it, but....nah.

Karma is meant to give comfort where none exists and keep people from jumping out of windows. Good does not always triumph and evil is not always punished.

That's the reality on our little 3rd stone. Life is random and chaotic.

Nope. I do not believe in Karma at all; however, I do like the little, fat Buddha statues at Chinese restaurants (only I recently found out that is actually some other dude). At any rate, that dude seemed happy, but if Karma exists he must have died of a coronary when he was young.
