Okay, help! Kinda funny how I always start w/ that line...

Anyhow, pops called asking me if he should get a new cable modem. He has a Surfboard SB4100 but it is old. Office Depot/Max/something has a D-Link w/ DOCSIS 2.0 for $40 after rebate. Now, the question -- is it worth it? I mean, should Dad go out and get a new modem? Is there anything better about one w/ DOCSIS 2.0 instead of 1.0?

Thanks as always for your help!

Doesn't your cable provider, provide you with a cable modem?

Yes, but you have to "rent" it. It is cheaper to purchase your own.

It doesn't matter of the CM is capable of DOCSIS 2.0 unless the headend cable equipment at the cable company and the cable infrastructure on the street support it too. That just means that piece of hardware can support it -- not that it will be asked to do so. It won't right now because no one is doing DOCSIS 2.0.

DOCSIS 1.0 is fine for CM-only. You only need higher DOCSIS if you're going to do Voice over IP (VoIP), but you probably won't be in the near future.

But it doesn't hurt to get the higher rated gear.
