Do you tip restaurant hostesses to jump to the front of the line when there's a wait list?

Talking casual restaurants, chain type stuff. When you walk up and there's a mile long wait, do you tip the hostess to jump to the front of the line?

It works wonders. I do it maybe 50% of the time. Depends on how long the wait is. Usually only $20 or so does the trick.

I'm guessing most don't, or it wouldn't work so well. Wondering how many do?

Usually no, but I tried this at Joes Stone Crab in South Beach the one time I went there and was appalled at the freakishly long wait for a table. Didn't make any difference.

In a Vegas club or a high end restaurant yes I'd tip if I didn't or couldn't make a reservation. Very rare I wouldn't make a reservation though.

At the local Olive Garden no.

Why? Its good to tip people in the service industry. The hostess can decide to do the right thing or let you wait with everyone else.

With the exception of restaurants that have drive-throughs, ball pits, and cartoon mascots, I've never seen one that didn't accept reservations.

    Maybe it's a northeast thing.

NEVER. When I got out of the USMC I vowed to never wait in line to eat again.. This decision was made 53 yrs ago. IMHO there is no restaurant food worth standing in line for.

Too many good places to eat around here to have to do that . If it's more than a 20 minute wait , I move on .

Oh ok, sorry. Didn't read the post very well. If there's a long wait for a table and I'm hungry I just go eat at the bar.

Maybe its a regional thing. Dunno. But it seems like a lot of casual chain type places don't.

Or maybe they do and everyone is waiting with one of those vibrating things for no reason.

    Never.

I will tip generously to the wait staff, but to be seated absolutely not!

I prefer to eat at the bar anyway. It's closer to the booze. :drunk:
