I have a few firearms that are Duracoated, Cerakoted etc. I like a little color variety on my guns. While at the range I heard a guy talking about how that ruins the value of a gun. Now I like to trade a few guns locally and have never run into a deal breaker.

I have a G21 I am about to Cerakote the slide Dark Earth and was thinking about doing the frame as well. Knowing that I will not keep this gun forever My question is would a coated gun be a deal breaker for you??

Unless I know the person, and their work ethic etc., anything custom (including coatings) = someone dicked with the gun. Meaning, I will have to sort out what they screwed up and want to now sell. That's why it's worth less to me.

2 of my Glocks are now wearing CCRs CPII finish. When I brought them to work to show off, each one on a different occasion, I had multiple coworkers ask if they were for sale. So I say no it doesn't lower the value, it just depends who's buying. Many gun shops would low ball you and say that "custom" guns don't sell easily. In such an instance I'd just find a private buyer.

Platings are ok (Np3, hard chrome, etc.). Spray on/bake on finishes will reduce the value IMHO...

To me they decrease value. I say this because there is no coating out there as durable as the factory glossy black on my Gen 3's so I would have to assume that the gun was refinished to hide wear or other abuse and scratches. I do value stainless slides but thats not a coating. This would be my assumption if I was considering buying the pistol. I'm a basic black kind a guy I guess.

What are you going to get back on a used Glock anyway?? The shops here in town are giving $300 max on used Glocks then sell them for $450 - $475. Make your gun the way you want it and forget the next potential owner. If you don't like the spray-on finishes you can always send it back to Glock and have them refinish it.

I like my guns to look nice also but when it comes down to it, they are tools for me to use.

I have been using Cerakote for the last two years and in that time I have refinished roughly 40 new Glocks simply b/c the owner wanted a different color.

There is no way I would sell or trade one of my guns in at a gun shop. They want you to give it to them so they can sell them for top dollor. I would rather sell it myself. And I think yes Duracoated, Cerakoted etc and stapling a gun drops the value..

Like I said this would be MY reason for the decreasing value if I were buying the gun. If someone wants to do this to their gun I am fine with that. But if I'm looking to buy and I dont know (who, where or why) it's a deal breaker for me. I know there are many reasons why someone might do this, I just answered the OP's question with my honest response.

I think it depends on the design. If you've got an origional Colt SAA, it just wouldn't do to add a coat of black 'Duracoat.' But it definitely improved the 2" Ruger Security Six I bought a few years back. In it's origional blued form, I probably wouldn't have given it a second look.

Re: Glocks -- I just bought a 'very, VERY well loved' Gen 2, 23 that's absolutely begging to be re-finished - 'basic black' all the way, baby! That said, I'm planning on keeping it, afterward... Either way, I know for sure it'll look better once the job's done (the thing absolutely will not have pink, red, or orange anywhere on it when I'm done.) ;)

Anything that takes the gun away from "stock" also reduces its value to most other people. Exceptions would occur if the weapon could be returned to its previous stock condition. Coatings, of course, won't allow this.
If I want to coat or paint a gun, or stipple it, or grind down the sharp points in the grip, or reduce the grip dimensions...then I know I'm doing it for myself and that noone else may ever want it.

It depends on the buyer. Me, personally, if a gun is coated to restore factory specs and ends up looking brand new when it's a 20 year old gun then I would pay market value or a little above.

If the coating makes it distinct that it's "aftermarket" i.e. OD Green on a Black gun, then for me it lowers the value. Even if it's aftermarket to mimic an original that the gun wasn't. Nickel plated coating on a gun not originally nickel plated but was available.

I buy milsurp weapons and used modern weapons. Refinishing kills it for me.

If I were buying a firearm and one had wear that told it's history, and another that had been "restored", I'm picking the one with the wear. I'll have some idea of its' history and how well it's been taken car of. Refinishing hides the past.

Unless it was a great deal, I wouldn't consider a refinished firearm.
