Inspired by a previous thread about language usage... Everybody I have ever talked to in life, says they stand in line. However on several tv shows, "Seinfeld" for example, they always talk about how they stand on line at the movies or whatever.

Is that like a regional thing or TV thing, or something? Many times I say I say it just to get on people's nerves.

If I really want to mess with them, I will say something about how I had to stand in queue at the store.

    I stand in line.

I also "set foot" in places, not "step foot."

I've never heard it in person, but have heard it on TV and in movies like the OP.

    It's a New England thing.

Heard it when I was in Manchester, New Hampshire picking up a rental car.

I was told to "stand on line ovah thah by the countah".

The only time I've ever stood on line is at Parris Island. As in "GET ON LINE!!! GET ON LINE NOW!!!!"

Fellow PI alumni will know what I'm talking about.

The only place I've ever heard someone say "on line" was in New York City.
