I've been considering a larger safe.

My current safe is really just a lock box. It's adequate, but I'd rather have something that I can put household valuables into as well as firearms and ammo. I think I'm in the market for something in the $2500 range.

To the point: Do you (and should I) keep ammo in the safe?

I've read not to keep primers and / or powder in the safe, but what about my humble stockpile of ammo?

If i had a safe(which i plan on getting) I would definately keep all my ammo in it, in ammo cans, at the bottom. That way if someone tries to steal it they will have a real hard time with the weight of the safe+ammo its gonna be heavy

I keep some of my ammo in the safe. My stockpiled ammo is in there.

My safe is about 250 pounds but not one of those big ones you are talking about. It was about $300. If I had a big safe I would store my ammo in it. I just keep the guns, loaded spare mags, and moisture absorbers in mine.

I heard an interview a while back of Suzanne Summers talking about the fire that destroyed her home. They had guns and documents in a large and expensive fire safe. They expected everything in there to survive, but when they opened it up all the paper was ash and the guns were destroyed. The firemen claimed it was because her husband kept ammo in the safe. I don't know how much ammo.

I don't have room to keep ammunition in my safe, but I do keep my ammo in a separate steel locker, it's not fireproof but at least it makes my ammunition a bit more theft-resistant.

Me too. In fact, I got one of the sheet metal safes with a series of shelves on one side designed for handguns, and the other open from top to bottom for rifles. I stack ammo cans and cases of bulk ammo on the rifle side, and use the shelves to store my pistol and rifle magazines on the other side. Those hi-cap mags can be pretty expensive also, so I'll at least make a burglar work for them.

I keep a few loaded magazines in my safe, otherwise I do not store ammo there. I store my ammo in ammo cans locked in a non-fireproof locker.

My gun safe is not near big enough to hold all my guns AND ammo. Ammo goes wherever i can find space.

Ammo should NOT be stored with guns.

Gun(s) loaded, or with ammo should only be stored together, IF it is your "go to" emergency, grab and go, gun......locked, and/or under your supervision.

I have a Browning Medallion and keep an emergency stash of ammo in it. About 1000 rounds of assorted handgun, rifle and shotgun ammo. It's just not big enough to store more without crowding out the guns.

I have a lock box that contain the bulk of my ammo (and of course everyones Social Security and Medicare premiums )

    Yes I do.

Also, Fort Knox is a great safe company to look at in your price range. It is what I have.

I do not have a huge stash of ammo but I keep in small safe that is fireproof.

    Depends on where I am.
Only a few loaded mags. No room for bulk ammo.

kinda interesting about the fireproof safe with ammo in it that everything was destroyed...poor safe IMO...i have loaded mags & clips in my safe..agaiin not bit enough for all of it...have all other ammo in xerox paper boxes stored in a spare closet...safe is in my bedroom...if i had a huge safe, then yes, all would be stored there
