I know in some foreign countries some taxi's will try and scam you (switch bills, run up meters, rob you, etc).

A report in San Francisco revealed taxi drivers were playing games, texting and even falling asleep behind the wheel.

"One passenger even complained that the driver offered a fare discount if she would make out with her friend."

I drove a cab for a short time. What a piece of crap job. One time I got the real piece of **** car. I mashed the gas to the floor and it topped out at 35mph. Another time the dispatcher threatened to call the law because we disagreed about the take that night.

It was mostly poor people that you picked up from the grocery. No tips. Not even a food stamp dollar. Went out about ten times and said screw this. Never got robbed though, so I guess it was a good experience.

My one and only taxi experience was pretty entertaining. I had just stepped off of my first flight...ever (it also happened to be cross country:faint:) and I was excited to piss away all of my money in the Vegas casinos. Well the lady and I hop in one of these taxis and of course I was the idiot that chose the seat behind the driver. This guy was at least 6'2 and every bit of 350 lbs and I could count the pores on the back of this mans neck he was so close. Well he starts out with the normal line of questioning about where we're from and blah, blah, blah. Then I learn that this man was a professional boxer, radio DJ, and he knew at least 10 different celebs on a first name basis. Things got real interesting when he asked if we (the lady and I) were planning on getting a hooker or hitting up one of the sex clubs (at least he recommended that I consider heading out of Clark County if I wanted a hooker).

I bet I've been in a cab less than five times. That includes a couple of times in Mexico, and a couple of times in NYC. None of my rides have been memorable in a positive or negative way.

I went to cancun years ago, many folks said not to take the taxi, they would try to rip you off so I didn't test it.

The last time I took a taxi was about a year and a half ago. I went to the bar, things went south quick lol. Chick I met there did me a favor and called the taxi because I couldn't operate an iPhone.

The guy helped the lady friend carry me to the car but dropped me off a block and a half from home.....

Not sure if that was on purpose or accident lol.

I lived my life thus far in the sorts of small-to-medium-sized-city-and-suburban-surroundings where the only taxis that exist are the ones you call to schedule an appointment with at some later point in the day.

I've yet to have a bad experience with that sort.

I've been in a LOT of cabs in South America, though, from motorcycle taxis to cars that look like they were built out of tuna cans. You alternate from fearing the traffic that isn't your cab to fearing that your cab will explode.

Other than the worrying, though, I've yet to have a bad experience with that sort, either.

Some good, one excellent, some "I got there".
As others said. Where you call ahead/schedual a pickup I have always gotten above average rides. Often they send a nice car/leather seat caddy.... But charge normal rates. (tips don't hurt)
I have a relative's place I leave my car when I have to fly. (so I know aprox costs. Last time I got a mini van. Driver wanted legal MJ and guns outlawed. :0 (he still got a tip)
When I have waved one down.... All I can say is I made it.

I have only been in one taxi in my life and that was in NYC at Times Square. I was on my senior year trip and three of us got a cab and road around for about an hour, had a blast.

Vegas: cab from airport to MGM Grand. From the moment the driver hears I'm heading to he strip, she starts a racist tirade on Asians. My wife is Asian. No tip for you.

NYC: cab from uptown to Madison Square Garden. About two blocks from MSG the cabbie turns LEFT from the far RIGHT lane. He got pulled over. The cop told us to leave the cab without paying.

Back in 1980, I drove a cab at night in NYC. What do you think my experiences were?

Vegas cab ride, running late for a shuttle and got screwed with a $50 charge from strip to airport. Did not have time to argue. Next trip talked to the "taxi police" who told me to take a pic of the guy and tell them I'd turn them in if they screwed with me with the fare. Now it only costs about $20 for same trip. Told one driver I was gonna video the route he took. Made for a nice short ride. Guy who screwed me took me on one long ride.

Cancun taxi's used to be cheap and honest now I take the bus. Last time wife and I got in a cab there the guy asked if we wanted to go to a gentlemans club, we said no. He then asked if we wanted some pot, we said no. The he said how about some cocaine which we also declined! He also offered meth and started in a direction I did not know and we had him pull over and took a bus back to our hotel.

Can't say I have had a lot of possitive experiences with taxis. After several rude and obnoxious a-hole drivers, I have sworn off them as best I can.

The worst was on my honeymoon - we had just flown into Vegas, and my wife had never been. Up until that time I had great taxi experiences in the city. We get this South African - he didnt load out bags, just popped the trunk. Car didnt have any upholstry left, windows didnt work and the AC was out. It felt like an oven in that Las Vegas heat.

He then starts to tell us that we should have come the prior week - the local cabby union held a protests where they parked all along the main roads and just parked. Said they had delayed flights and travel for hours. He was so happy about it.

We get to the hotel and he doesnt even help us unload out bags - luckily the porters were more than helpful. I pay him and give him all of a dollar tip, which I thought was pretty generous after that horrid trip.

As I am BSing with the porters, he comes up to me screaming and starts kicking our bags over, irrate that he only got one dollar tip. He's screaming, threatening to hit me, etc. Well I lose my temper and start screaming back. In an act of stupidity, I took $5 out of my pocket and throw it behind his car to get him away.

Luckily, and thankfully, one of the porters jumps into his cab and parks his car on the street, the cabby running after him. I ended up tipping those two porters about $20 each for the event, and made sure to give them something extra every time I saw them during the trip.

Since then I've avoided taxis as best I can. I either call for a town car if money allows, walk if possible, take an airport/hotel bus, or use mass transit if no other means presents itself.
