I'm referring to something challenging which requires thought and choice.

I play and study chess. I also found a cool web site on calculus which I may get into again...

Khan Academy provides a good overview of just about anything you'd want to know. I visit the site every now and then

I build a memory palace and periodically add new things to it. It's a surprisingly diverting exercise and keeps the brain working when there's nothing to otherwise occupy it. Really good for long waits places.

    Sudoku

Building a Factory Five Racing Spyder GT that has been highly modified so there's a lot of "engineering" involved.

Most of my "engineering" involves sitting on my roll around stool while drinking beer and eating peanuts with my westie Dexter.

Bad thing about drinking beer with Dexter is that he's bad about back washing into the bottle.

It's a sort of associative trick for memorizing specific information. Roman orators used to do it to recall important parts or even entire paragraphs of their speeches.

Anyhow, it's pretty easy to get started. Say you want to remember your shopping list:

1: Visualize a place you know that has several rooms (it's usually easier to start with your house). Imagine yourself at the front door or where you usually walk into the place/house.

2: Place one of the items on your shopping list in that front room. Imagine that you're doing this . . . physically setting the toothpaste (or whatever) down in that room.

3: Repeat with rooms (imagining yourself traveling about the house, placing the items down) and items until you're done with your list.

4: When it's time to recall your items; imagine yourself walking through the door, traveling through the house in order and retrieving each of the items on your list. Toothpaste in the foyer, coffee in the living room, ammo in the bedroom, etc.

It's good practice to start small--7-10 things, probably. Oddly enough, you'll tend to remember these things very well even after some time.

    Doing license plates is fun.

sudoku - on iphone or books

crossword puzzles - easy ones that are quick to complete and will keep your mind sharp but won't frustrate

for lack of a better term, "self-help" books ... and other non-fiction

    My job.
Seriously, very challenging. Huge amount of analysis and strategic planning.

At home I work on investments, read GT and a couple of other sites to relax not challenge my brain.
