Do California people know know just how ridiculously expensive it is to live there?

My GF's sister just got a PG&E electric bill for $1300.

Is that normal for there? What do electric/gas expenses run for you California folks?

Here in Michigan, my electric bill is $180/mo, gas is $60/mo. My water is pumped out of the well, so no expense there except for the electricity. I keep my thermostat at about 72. I run several computers 24/7.

I thought CA was supposed to have really low utility rates? Here in CT it costs me $200 a month in the winter just for lights and tv. No gas and we are on well water.

In SE New Mexico (High Plains) I pay about $150/ month for all of my electricity needs and about $100/ month the rest of the year...that is to heat and cool a 40 year old 3000 sq/ft home...It was costing me at least that much to heat our 790 sq/ft home in Northern CA four years ago.

No, that is not normal. My PG&E bill for a 1200sqft town house on the coast last month was less than $75.00 / $29.97 - Natural Gas :: $ 46.07 - Electric.

And that's with central heat, 2 servers, 1 main PC (like yours all the computers run 24/7), two refers, a freezer, electric washer and dryer and three adults.

Ya'll might want to think about doing some renovations with your lights, appliances and windows. Check your insulation, things like that.

That's insane! Mine run under $50 for gas and electric combined. With another $50 every two months for water...

No, we have no idea what it costs, we don't pay our bills we leave them for the state to pay.

Of course we know, what kind of a question is that? That is extremely high though. My bill has been as low as $75, last month it was ~$130. 2k square foot house, propane heat, electric water heater and dryer, TV on all the time. Summer time it can get over $300.

We have tiered power pricing. Baseline is $.115, the if you run more than a nightlight, you are into tier 2 at $.131, then $.26, then $.38kW/h. I have never gone higher than the tier 4, it scares me to think what that would cost.

What really burns my biscuits is the nuclear decommissioning fee. Make me pay to have less plants and more expensive power. Morons.

How shady are her neighbors? Are they the type that would be running a basement full of florescent lights 24/7 off an extension cord from an exterior outlet? How's the water bill looking?

If she recieved a $1300 electric bill from PG&E then she is using 1.21 gigawatts of electricity a day. I have been serviced by PG&E since 1991, and I don't think I have ever had an electric bill over $200. Typical bills are $120 to a high of $180.

Serriously, something is amiss with this woman or with PG&E to get a monthly bill that high. California is expensive, but not that expensive.

I smell a billing error. Our electric bill here is anywhere from $100-$130 a month depending on the season.

That is a good call. I had them misread a number once so it certainly happens. With the tiered pricing it can go up FAST.
