Display rank on burial flag case

I want to put a friend of mines burial flag in a case and I need help on the name plate. His D14 has his rank when discharged as SP5 (P) with the note APTD: 12 Nov 66 DOR: 12 Nov 65. Can someone tell me how best to display it on the plaque. Thank you.

A person memorialized as having a rank he never held? He won't be around to complain, but that would be embarrassing to any Soldier or military family. Why not just throw on an eagle and pretend he was colonel?
You did read the part where I mistakenly advised Buck Sergeant chevrons, was corrected, and admitted my mistake, right?

I was responding to what you said to me, which was that you advised somebody to put the wrong rank on his flag case because you have seen it done before.

That was after you gave the advice and then the excuse that:
Pardon my confusion. I'm not well versed in military ranks and naively assumed SPC5 was the same as a Sergeant. I see now they two are considered equal but not identical.
Trying to have the last word about it is not making your advice look smarter.

Specialist ranks had been phased out by the time I joined. I never saw anyone higher than a SPC4/SPC.

My understanding from what I read is that an E4 Corporal would out rank all Specialist ranks. Apparently no one was ever awarded SP8 or SP9.
