Ex-fire chief, family guilty in theft case

May. 28, 2009 12:55 PM

Associated Press

A former Harquahala Valley Fire District chief and his wife have pleaded guilty to stealing money from the department, and his son admitted stealing fire hydrants from his employer and selling them to the fire district.

The Maricopa County Attorney's Office said on Thursday it wants a judge to give 51-year-old former chief Randal Long two years in prison and five years probation at his sentencing next month. Long pleaded guilty to taking $55,000 in fire district money and overpaying himself an additional $30,000 in unearned salary.

Long's wife Sandra pleaded guilty to one count of theft for cashing unearned paychecks, and son Carl admitted taking the fire hydrants.

Sandra and Carl Long will pay restitution and receive probation.

Put the chief in jail where he belongs. He is supposed to be the guiding force for the department. What a let down for the remaining members. Especially to steal from the department.
My personal opinion the whole family needs to spend a little time behind bars. It might make the wife and son think about changing their life style.
