For turbo diesels I would suggest warming up the engine at least 1 minute or so, this is to ensure not only proper lubrication in the engine but proper circulation of oil in the turbo bearings as well.

If you're comparing a typical 2.5 - 3.0 liter diesel to a 1.8-2.0 and above gasoline engined car then the difference is still significant, especially if we're talking about direct injection or common rail diesel engines.

However if you're considering sub compact cars such as the Jazz, Swift, etc. (1.5 and below engines) then the difference becomes minimal at best.
