Did you ever saw something like this?

    In your local store (I mean in place where you buy food)? I'm interested because it's one of the things I want to produce in my company :). It's called pierogi. It could be frozen, boiled - ready for your plate or uncooked. It's dough with meat, sauerkraut and mushrooms and many different things inside (a lot of versions). Delicious in sweet version too with fruits inside and dense cream on with little sugar..mmmmm. So did you saw something like this? Is it popular? I need good business plan, you know.     We have good Polish deli's here that sell fantastic Pierogis, among other things. There is a store-bought "brand" that really is quite marginal (meaning it sucks)...Mrs. T's...it tastes NOTHING like "the real deal".

    I like brandy poured over the fruit ones.

    That first link looked alike what we called "empanadas" which are dough filled pastries that to deep fried, They have either meats and/or beans inside and taste pretty good depending on what you stuff inside of them. They along with Japanese gyoza and very good dough filled treats.

    My mom made pierogi by hand when I was growing up. She usually made it with ground beef and onions (and probably some other things I'm not remembering), but also made it with ground lamb and veal occasionally. Very tasty!
    If I remember correctly, she also made it with fruit a few times - blackberries or peaches. ^7

    the best place to buy them is at a church having a sale.

    My wujek and his friends make them by the thousands. The sell them to raise money for the church.

    With the onions swimming in butter YUM!

    One of the few "ethnic" foods I like (also a Ukrainian favourite :) ); i like them best with a little sour cream, but it's easy to eat so many that you feel bloated for a week after dinner :)

    Nestor, here in SF Bay Area you can get them not only at ethnic delis, but also at Trader Joe's and few other chain stores. It's quite a popular item.

    Also, remember that this area has lots of Asians. To them, pierogi is just a variety of potstickers (now we are talking about hundreds of stores and restaurants).

    We make them every year. We stuff them with homemade polish sausage, carmelized onions and mushrooms, potato and cheese and my favorite, sauerkraut.

    Wow! So I can see it's quite popular. I'm not surprised about this, but I'm sure there are regions where it's not so well known.
    BTW do you know (I mean taste in past) horseradish or beetroot and horseradish salad?
    hwyhobo I'm not sure is it a proper name for chrzan & cwikla?

    We usually have the ones like exxotic says are passable........Mrs. T's. I remember as Hans does when I was younger my parents and grandparents making these at the holiday time filled exactly as Hans said. Hmmmmm:)

    OHHH YEAAAAHHH pierogis!!! I love the little suckers smothered in butter and onions! I even have a little plastic gadget thingy that is called a pierogi maker. I guess you lay the dough on it, put the filling on top, then close it in half, and it seals it shut. YUM!

    I may have to make some now!
